Self-Awareness Through Breathing

MODERN BAND

Students will breathe in box breaths as a warm-up.

  • 4 beats in, hold for 4, 4 beats out.
  • Repeat with increasing amounts of beats. Arms will go up with inhale and back down with exhale.

Continue in the same way, but instead of simply exhaling, buzz your lips on the exhale by creating a small opening in the center of your embouchure.

Repeat this process using the mouthpiece of the pBuzz. Alternate between and “TEE” and “TAH” vowel shape to produce high and low pitches.

Self-Management

MODERN BAND

  • Place your Left Hand where it says “L”, and your Right Hand where it says “R”.
  • After watching the video, students will be allowed to explore the pBuzz by finding the different pitches, noticing their sounds, colors, names, and numbers.

Social Awareness Through Partner Work

MODERN BAND

  • Pair up with someone nearby and take turns going through each pitch/slide position together. Give each other feedback on how the pitches sound at each position.
  • F, G, A, Bb, B, C - Play 4 beats of quarter notes on each pitch before resting/breathing again, as practiced in the box breathing.
  • Count 4 beats of rest together before starting the next pitch.
  • Match pitch with your partner and make sure to check for correct embouchure and hand positions. Keep each other accountable with tempo, pitch, and hand positions.

Now add eighth notes and half notes to your practice by following this pattern as a class. Use your tongue to articulate the staccatos and separate each note.
