What are Smarter-Balanced Assessments?

The Smarter Balanced Assessments (SBA) in mathematics and English Language Arts/Literacy (ELA) are aligned to the Hawaii Common Core Standards, and designed to measure whether students are "on track" for readiness in college and/or career.

These are mandatory assessments given to students in grades 3-8 and 11.

For Elementary...

Students in grades 3-6 take the SBA Summative Assessment in late April and early May.

There are 2 parts:

  • Computer Adaptive Test: Computer adaptive testing adjusts to a student’s ability by basing the difficulty of future questions on previous answers, providing more accurate measurement of student achievement, particularly for high and low-performing students.

Math is only comprised of the CAT

  • Performance Task: Tasks that challenge students to apply their knowledge and skills to respond to real-world problems.

ELA has both the CAT and writing performance task

  • The writing performance task consists of 2 parts:
  • Part 1: 2-3 sources and short research questions
  • Part 2: Same sources, long essay response

What are the scores used for?

The scores provide feedback to the teachers, school community, families, and state on how well students are learning at Waianae Elementary.

In high school, SBA scores are used to determine placement into advanced and college level courses.
