The Vision (Why ODIN)

We believe that decentralized innovation networks will be the primary way we solve hard problems in the world

To that end, we will experiment with and mentor evolutionary organizational principles, and create ways to scale through connecting high-trust spaces so that innovation networks and their members can flourish.

What is ODIN?

ODIN = Open Decentralized Innovation Network

  • Open - Open to everyone to join and participate
  • Decentralized - No bosses, managers, or centralized decision-making
  • Innovation - Taking ideas from inception to launch through on-boarding, education, mentorship, and funding.
  • Network - Not a single organization, but a number of independent groups and organizations working together in a coordinated network.

6 of 26

The Values

  • Open Source - All contributions in the network are open and shared through open source or creative commons licenses
  • Sustainable - Open to commercial and non-profit members. The network will help secure resources for the non-profit members and connect the commercial ideas to funding.
  • Evolutionary Operating System - Governance of the network will be done through “Teal”-based open source methodologies (eg: Sociocracy 3.0)
  • Community - We create community and high levels of trust through relationships-building and human connection.
  • Emergent - The network builds culture and mechanisms to sense opportunities, resolve tensions, and co-create new possibilities that emerge from the interactions of the whole.

ODIN Primary Drivers

  • Organizational Driver #1: Enable organizing for radical decentralized collaboration
    • Experiment: Evolutionary Organizational Principles

  • Organizational Driver #2: Scale communities of trust
    • Experiment: Space Trains

Seed Structure (the space train)

The initial bootstrap will be around an initial innovation network comprised of the following functions:

  • On-boarding and Community - Bringing people into the community and introducing them to the world-changing technology, systems, and products we are building. Building and maintaining communities and creating spaces where participants find meaning.
  • Education: Bring people through the journey from being curious about the ecosystem to being a valuable active contributor through education and hands-on learning.
  • Build: The middle of the space train is the build space. This is where creators, builders, projects, and ideas take shape and go from from concept to working prototype, and from idea to product. Builders need spaces to collaborate, share knowledge, and build community. Cross-pollination and intermingling of talent is one goal of this space.
  • Growth and Sustainability: Mentoring and coaching of ideas, people, and organizations to add capacity and move projects from exploration to launch. Guide the the whole of ODIN to sustainability. Connecting promising ideas and groups to funding sources, partnerships, and collaborations internal and external to the ecosystem (VC, grants, ESG, organizations). Bring in resources for the network to thrive.
  • Governance: Explore and experiment with methods of collaboration, cooperation, and decentralized decision making, both on and off chain. Manage the ODIN “operating system” of how the network functions.

Let’s Talk About Space Trains

Introductory Video by Joe Edelman: Redesigning Society on Meaning

  • “Stacking Strangers” to scale has come at a price - we’ve lost our sense of meaning and belonging
  • Spaces are places where we can find greater meaning and community
  • Values-based metrics, not goal-oriented KPIs
    • Sources of meaning like honesty and courage are about values and process, whereas fears (like the fear of rejection or failure) are about outcomes. Focus on values and the process.
  • Space Trains are a way to connect a “train” of spaces so value moves from space to space

Innovation Space Train

Onboarding and Community -> Education -> Build -> Growth & Sustainability -> Governance

Each of the above “spaces” will be structured as part of a “train” of spaces that enhance meaning and flourishing for participants and built on concrete, identified values. The “train” is built with on-chain metadata and enables people to flow from space to space based on their activity and engagement.

Still developing how this will work, and based on Redesigning Society on Meaning. Let’s figure it out!

Common S3nse Framework

Through 10 essential principles, this Common Sense Framework (CSF) helps you grow and maintain organizations where BOTH the people and the organization can thrive.

The Framework lays out the big picture of what to consider to achieve this, and suggests specific practices and tools that can help you to get there.

Two Principles for Orientation

Clarify Purpose

Ensure that everyone understands who the organization or team is serving, why and to what end… so that everyone is able to focus and unite their efforts on achieving that purpose.

Develop Strategy

Develop a strategy to guide value creation… so that everyone shares a common direction, and strategy is adapted as necessary to achieve the purpose.

Three Principles for Navigation

Focus on Value

Focus your daily work on value delivery… so that the stuff that needs doing to achieve your pupose is done.

Sense and Respond

Identify, prioritize and respond to impediments and opportunities… so that you can adapt or pivot as necessary and improve where you can

Run Experiments

Run experiments to address complex challenges… so that you learn how to move closer to where you want to be.

17 of 26

Two Principles for Structure

Enable Autonomy

Free individuals and teams up to create value as autonomously as possible… so that you can deliver value fast and avoid unnecessary dependencies

Collaborate on Dependencies

Co-create and evolve a coherent system to deal with all dependencies...so that you deliver value fast when dependencies cannot be avoided.

18 of 26

Three Principles for Transformation

Invest in Learning

Support everyone in developing their competence and skill… so that their contribution remains valuable and the organization can evolve

Intentionally Develop Culture

Collaborate on fostering a cooperative culture where everyone can achieve their fuller potential… so that you build and maintain an engaging and productive work environment

Build Shared Mental Model

Invest in building shared mental models… so that everyone can engage in meaningful dialogue about what’s happening and what needs to be done

Most elegant next steps

  • Prepare a slide deck for presenting this to different stakeholders
  • Convene an initial kick off meeting
  • Establish the charter and values for each space
  • Identify initial ways each space will pass value along to and coordinate with other spaces
  • Convene an S3 study group to train groups and facilitators
  • Something else?

The Vision (old)

Our vision is to empower a dynamic and collaborative community of visionary thinkers, web3 developers, high-trust communities, and impact-driven organizations that operate as a decentralized network, uniting their diverse strengths and expertise to catalyze innovative ideas from conception to fruition. Together, we will cultivate a culture of continuous collaboration, fostering an environment of radical innovation and sustainable impact that positively transforms our world.
