STEM in Lessons (how make Science & Physics lessons more engaging and relevant…)

  • Link to careers - see attached slides – identifies when topic can be used in a career and the high salary that can be achieved.
  • Some of these careers may need explaining – as few young people know what an ‘engineer’ does… focus on problem solving and developing solutions
  • These slides try to use equal numbers of men and women and variety of ages and ethnicity (role models) all slides used in lessons should be designed with this in mind
  • Provide opportunities for reflection on the skills that students have learnt
  • Identify career pathways – A-levels, apprenticeship, university , etc
  • Provide social context and a positive message… instead of ‘add a bulb to your buzzer circuit’ say ‘how could you adapt the buzzer circuit to aid a deaf person’
  • Classroom displays should focus on careers and/ or social and environmental impact. During lessons links to careers can be made.
  • Identify changes in labour market and how there is a STEM skills shortage

  • Discussion with other STEM heads… Engineering & Maths- joined up thinking?
  • Links to other organisations… Higher Education and business and industry?
