John 9:1-7

9 As he passed by, he saw a man blind from birth. ² And his disciples asked him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?” ³ Jesus answered, “It was not that this man sinned, or his parents, but that the works of God might be displayed in him. ⁴ We must work the works of him who sent me while it is day; night is coming, when no one can work. ⁵ As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.” (John 9:1-5, ESV)

⁶ Having said these things, he spit on the ground and made mud with the saliva. Then he anointed the man's eyes with the mud ⁷ and said to him, “Go, wash in the pool of Siloam” (which means Sent). So he went and washed and came back seeing. (John 9:6-7, ESV)

The Relationship between Sin and Suffering

John 9:3

“It is not as though God decided that this particular individual should be blind from birth so that he would have the opportunity to show how great a work he could perform. It is rather that he overruled the misfortune so that both the man and those who would see the miracle would come to realize that Jesus was “the light of the world.”

But since we belong to the day, let us be sober, having put on the breastplate of faith and love, and for a helmet the hope of salvation.” �(1 Thessalonians 5:5-8, ESV)

“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.” (Matthew 5:14-16, ESV)

Application

“On two other occasions Jesus used saliva in acts of healing (Mark 7:33; 8:23). Here he used saliva to make mud, mixing it with dirt. This becomes significant later in the story when we are told he performed the healing on a sabbath, because the act of kneading (which is involved in making mud from saliva and dirt) was regarded as one of the thirty-nine forms of work that violated the sabbath.”

“The pool of Siloam, south-west of the City of David, received its water through a channel which carried (or ‘sent’) it from the spring of Gihon in the Kidron valley. The suitability of drawing attention to Siloam may have depended simply on its name. As it was called ‘Sent’, so Jesus was supremely the sent one (cf. notes on 20:21). Further, the water for the water-pouring rites of the Feast of Tabernacles (cf. notes on 7:37–39) was drawn from the pool of Siloam.” �
