TOPIC- POWER TRANSMISSION

2 of 9

INTRODUCTION

  • The belt and rope is use to transmit power from one shaft to another shaft by means of pulley which rotate in same speed or at different speeds.

  • * The velocity of the belt.
  • *The arc of contact.
  • *The pulley should not be to close.
  • *The pulley should not be too far.

BELT TYPE

4 of 9

OPEN BELT DRIVE

  • In an open belt drive, the belt proceeds from the top of one pulley to the top of another pulley without crossing.
  • Here the entire belt remains in the same plane in every rotation.
  • Here driver and driven shafts rotate in the same direction.

CROSS BELT DRIVE

  • In cross belt drive, the belt proceeds from the top of one pulley to the bottom of another pulley and thus crosses itself.
  • Here belt bends in two different planes in every rotation.
  • Here driver and driven shafts rotate in opposite directions.

COMPOUND BELT DRIVE

  • A compound belt drive is used when power is transmitted from one shaft to another through a number of pulleys as shown in the figure below. 2.1) Crowing of Belt Pulley. Before V-belts were invented, machinery was usually powered through flat canvas belts running on crowned pulleys.
