CHS 4-Year Honor Cord

What is the Chico High School 4-Year Honor Cord?

Our World Language Dept is proud to recognize students that dedicate themselves to four years of language learning at Chico High School. The orange and white honor cord is earned by students that maintain an B average or higher in the course of four years of language at Chico High.

Each year, we hold an intimate ceremony on campus to recognize our recipients. Students can wear the honor cord at graduation, and it looks great on resumes and college applications!

Frequently Asked Questions:

  1. Are the Seal of BIliteracy and the Honor Cord the same thing? No. Each honor has different requirements. The Seal of Biliteracy is given by the State of California, and the Honor Cord is given by the Chico High World Language Department.
  2. Can I earn the honor cord if I don’t take four years of the same language? You can earn the honor cord if you have four years of language from Chico High. If you mix and match Spanish and French, you could earn the cord, AND be on the path to being trilingual.
  3. Do I qualify for the honor cord if I took Spanish 1 in Middle School? You qualify for the honor cord if you take four years of language at Chico High. We offer Spanish up to AP Spanish Literature, so you can start in Spanish 2 and have plenty of opportunities to fulfill this requirement while at CHS.

  • I transferred from a different school. Am I still eligible to earn the honor cord? Each transfer is reviewed on a case-by-case basis. However, if your transcripts reflect that you were taking language classes at your other school, and continue with a world language at Chico High throughout your senior year, you will likely qualify for the honor cord.

Premio A.L.M.A.

What is the PREMIO ALMA?

The Premio ALMA is a prestigious award given to students who successfully complete the rigorous four-year Spanish Speakers program. This program includes AP Spanish Language and AP Spanish Literature courses and recognizes students who demonstrate academic excellence, commitment to their education, and pride in their cultural heritage.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

  • How is the Premio ALMA different than the Seal of Biliteracy or the 4-Year Honor Cord? This is an award to specifically recognize students from the Spanish-Speakers pathway, since it’s an award that goes beyond what you’ve done at Chico High. Some of you have been studying Spanish for 10+ years, this is a life-long achievement, and deserves to be recognized! We are SO proud of your commitment to your languages and your future. ¡Felicidades!
  • Can I earn the Premio ALMA if I don’t take four years in the Spanish-Speakers pathway? You can earn the honor cord if you have four years of language from Chico High. If you mix and match Spanish and French, you could earn the cord, AND be on the path to being trilingual.
  • Do I qualify for the honor cord if I took Spanish 1 in Middle School? You qualify for the honor cord if you take four years of language at Chico High. We offer Spanish up to AP Spanish Literature, so you can start in Spanish 2 and have plenty of opportunities to fulfill this requirement while at CHS.

  • I transferred from a different school. Am I still eligible to earn the honor cord? Each transfer is reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
