Content Objectives vs. Language Objectives

Content Objectives:

  • Define what students should know and be able to do in relation to academic content.

Language Objectives:

  • Define how students will use language (reading, writing, speaking, and listening) to achieve the content objectives.

Build Background

  • Seek ways for students to make personal connection to the content.
  • Emphasize key vocabulary. Direct students to find cognates.
  • Offer bilingual glossaries/vocab lists.
  • Be aware of references, allusions, slang, expressions, and other words that may require cultural knowledge or advanced English proficiency. Plan to explain, show pictures, etc. as appropriate. Exs. give me a hand vs. help me, keeping up with the Joneses, sweep it under the rug, that’s a no-brainer, s’more, Old Glory vs. The American Flag.

Comprehensible input - reflect on language

My Saturday afternoon:)

Beneath the verdant canopy, he sat in contemplative repose, engrossed in the exegesis of an ancient manuscript, the dappled sunlight casting intricate chiaroscuro patterns upon the vellum pages.

Where was he and what exactly was he doing at the time the sentence was written?

Comprehensible Input

Beneath the vibrant green canopy, I sat in thoughtful stillness, immersed in the interpretation of an ancient manuscript, with the filtered sunlight creating detailed light and shadow patterns on the parchment pages.

Under the green trees, I sat quietly, thinking deeply as I read an old book. The sunlight shined through the leaves, making cool light and shadow patterns on the pages.

I sat under the big green trees, looking at a really old book. The sunlight came through the leaves and made little light and shadow shapes on the pages.

Speaking

  • Seek out communication with students.
  • Intentionally pronounce new words a few times.
  • Allow students to work in pairs or in small groups. Multilingual Group Discussion Sheet
  • Allow students to read from their paper, allow writing prior to speaking.
  • Encourage students to discuss what they are learning. As often as possible, these conversations should be student-led and interactive. Group discussion sheet.

Speaking

Prompts we can use to encourage communication:

“Tell me more about that.” “What do you mean by. . .?” “What else. . .?” “How do you know?” “Why is that important?” “What does that remind you of?” The teacher can also model and clarify by restating the student’s answer: “In other words. . . Is that accurate?” It is also important to allow wait time for students to formulate answers. If necessary, the teacher can also call on another student to extend his or her classmate’s response: “That’s correct. Can someone else tell me more about. . . ?”
