Revised November 10, 2015

2 of 13

How using mind maps (graphic organizers) supports struggling students

  • provides a visual representation of complex ideas
  • allows students to begin with a non-linear way of thinking, and supports organization into a writing piece
  • “mistake tolerant” (can be easily changed/edited)
  • allows students to work with the support of keyboarding and spell check
  • saves work in the cloud (helps with organization)

Finding MindMup 2.0

MindMup (original) still exists, but 2.0 has so many important features, you should definitely use it instead.

You can either

  • Navigate to drive.mindmup.com
  • Install the MindMup 2.0 App from the Chrome Web Store

Basic Tips

Add an idea quickly

  • Double click on the background
  • Press INS or TAB on your keyboard

Just jump in

  • The main benefit of an electronic graphic organizer is that it lets you get your ideas out in ANY order, and then provides ways to organize and use those ideas.
  • The best way to get started is to just start putting some ideas on the screen.

Don’t want to find your app?

  • Just go to drive.mindmup.com. It’s the same thing!
  • (But beware that if you go to mindmup.com, you will be in the original app, not the 2.0 app.)

Organize your ideas

Drag each idea onto the corresponding category. It will connect to that node.

If you have ideas that don’t fit yet, make a category called “Uncategorized” and drag them there for safekeeping.

Continue from there. You may want to challenge the class to come up with some other categories. If you want to delete any ideas, you can simply click on the idea and then press the delete key.
