HOW PLANS DEVIATED

  • I originally planned to evaluate other non-ESRI/non-ArcGIS software, such as Forum8 Studio.
    • ESRI had enough varieties of software and confusing details to figure out that just using their software was enough.

  • I originally planned to import OpenData files from ArcGIS Pro into CityEngine much more quickly than was feasible.
    • Despite both software products being branded as “ESRI ArcGIS”, the project files do not play nice with one another. Data could only be exported to OBJ and then imported programmatically using a Python script.

  • I originally planned for the collaborative features to be up and running in the first iteration.
    • Turns out multiplayer is hard… Unreal Engine multiplayer currently only works on local LAN, still working to get it to run on WAN.

  • I originally planned to evaluate ArcGIS 360 VR in the web browser more.
    • The browser version had limited functionality, so I did not continue using it.

CHALLENGES

  • Learning 3 different pieces of software that I could have easily spent 100+ hours experimenting with and still not fully understand…

  • Despite ArcGIS software being updated continually, the tutorial resources are severely outdated
    • Last CityEngine video tutorial: 2014

  • Multiplayer on WAN!

LEARNINGS/NEXT PROJECT IDEAS…

  • Don’t base your project on software that was ported to VR as an afterthought…

  • I do not think I want to continue using ArcGIS.
