Welcome to Senior Year!

Counselors are here to save the day during the rollercoaster ride of senior year! Here’s the game plan:

    • Senior Counseling Lessons

Senior Year At-a-Glance

Important Dates

    • Check (and READ) CUSD email daily! Teachers, Counselors and colleges will send important information via email.

*Use personal email, NOT CUSD Student email, for outside organizations (college apps, financial aid, scholarship

    • Meet deadlines (college applications, scholarship/financial aid, etc).
    • Keep track of usernames and passwords
    • Pay close attention to college portals, to-do lists, and emails.
    • Remember, grades matter for college admissions as well as financial aid and scholarships!

Senior Year MUST DOs…

    • Review your transcript for accuracy; it's your responsibility.

    • Ensure your name and address match your Social Security card and Birth Certificate for FAFSA and college applications.

    • To make corrections, complete the ‘Cal Grant GPA Demographic Verification’ form.

    • Check your total credits; you need at least 170 to stay on track for graduation.

    • Verify completion of all required courses for your diploma and a-g requirements using the Graduation Requirements rubric on the website.

4-Year Colleges Systems

UC (University of California)

      • 9 campuses: A-G requirements; Application includes courses/grades, involvement/activities, four personal insight questions
      • Application opens Aug. 1, but you cannot submit until Nov. 1, Due Nov. 30
      • UCLA, Berkeley, Davis, Irvine, Santa Barbara, San Diego, Santa Cruz, Riverside, Merced

CSU (California State University)

      • 23 campuses: A-G requirements; Admission based on GPA and # of A-G courses
      • Application opens Oct. 1, Due Nov. 30

Out of State/Private Schools

    • These schools will have their own requirements and deadlines.
    • Visit the website of schools you are interested in to find individual due dates and deadlines.
    • CSU/UC does not require ACT/SAT, but check private and out-of-state universities for their requirements.
    • Research colleges to ensure they meet your needs and that you meet their admissions criteria.
    • Important to attend our workshop to receive tips for applying and early action/decision (some deadlines are as early as Oct. 14)

Playing Sports in College

    • If you are interested in being a collegiate athlete, ensure your counselor knows!
    • Check with your counselor to make sure that you are on track to meet the NCAA and/or NAIA requirements
    • Visit the websites and create a free account with NCAA and NAIA for more information

Reasons to Consider Community College

    • Undecided on academic or career goals
    • Haven't met 4-year college admission requirements
    • Seeking a second chance at ideal 4-year college

Advantages of Community College

    • Not ready or able to leave home
    • Affordability
    • Additional academic preparation or exploration

California Community Colleges

    • 116 campuses in CA
    • Earn an associate degree or transfer to CSU/UC campuses (2-3 years full-time)
    • Offer numerous certification/vocational programs

Admission Requirements

    • Must be 18 years old
    • Have a high school diploma or GED

Honors Programs

Honors programs at local community colleges offer enhanced educational experiences for academically outstanding students. Applicants must meet at least one requirement:

    • Cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher (3.0 for Madera)
    • Top 25% of their class
    • SAT score of 1200+ or ACT score of 24+

Program Benefits for Honors Students

    • Earn a Certificate of Honors at graduation and recognition of Honors courses on transcripts
    • Study with experienced and highly-qualified faculty
    • Receive educational counseling and transfer assistance from specially trained Honors counselors
    • Receive priority for early registration of classes
    • Obtain advice on scholarships and other financial opportunities
    • Improve opportunities for transfer to a four-year college or university
