DESIGN THINKING
IN THE CLASSROOM
HELLO!
I’M LESLIE MCBETH
I think technology can support good pedagogy while making teachers lives more efficient, so we have more time to dream up crazy projects.

HOW MIGHT WE PREPARE OUR STUDENTS TO SOLVE THE WORLD’S BIG PROBLEMS?
GOALS
To understand the design thinking framework and how it can support innovative pedagogy
To participate in a design sprint and become familiar with the process
To generate ideas for how you can use design thinking in your classroom.
STUDENT DRIVEN
Students are motivated to learn when they see the connection between their learning and the real world, and when their learning is personalized.
TEACHER FACILITATED
Teachers provide timely feedback and guide student learning, without spending a lot of time on paperwork and tracking or requiring all students to do the same thing at the same time.

WHAT DO YOU THINK STUDENTS SAY?
Learning like this showed me how there’s not always one right answer to every question.
-Robin, Grade 12
“
I started to see how everything works together, rather than just seeing subjects as separate parts.
“
I don’t like having all this choice. Can you please just tell me what I should do next?
- Susan, Grade 11

The best way to learn is to do; the worst way to teach is to talk.
Pick Your Team
Walk around the room, introduce yourself to someone. Find someone who has something in common with you. Pair up, find another person who also shares your interest. Keep doing so until you have a team of four.

P3
What is the problem that your user is experiencing? Write your problem as follows:
___________ needs __________________ because ___________________.
(user) (needs) (insight)
Ideate - Crazy 8’s
P7
Share your best three ideas from your crazy 8’s with your partner. Then, swap sheets. What questions do you have? How can you push this idea forward? What needs are missing? What would you add?
Refine
Sketch four new ways for your partner to meet this challenge/problem.
P5
Iterate - Draw Toast!
Use the build space below to sketch out a process map of you would design a solution. Include tools, resources and people you would need to make it happen.
P6
Reflect & Share
How did your thinking shift or change throughout this design thinking process? What is your biggest take away?
What works well about your prototype? What doesn’t work well? What did you learn from the failings of your prototype?
