Properties of Numbers

All actions in algebra are based on certain properties, or rules. These properties give you the freedom to make decisions about the best way to solve problems.

Workbook page 24

Properties are written using variables. You can replace the variable with any kind of number: fractions, decimals, signed numbers, and so on.

6 of 20

The commutative property works only with addition or multiplication.

You can add or multiply numbers in any order, and the result will be the same.

Workbook page 24

The associative property also works with addition or multiplication. It allows you to change how numbers are grouped.

Parenthesis are used to show which operation should be done first. However, when the operations are addition only or multiplication only, you can change how the numbers are grouped.

In the example, notice how these properties make it easier to multiply numbers.

TIP

Look for ways to group compatible numbers – numbers that are easy to work with.

Here, it is easier to multiply 25 by 4 than 25 by 12.

The distributive property involves multiplication and addition.

Study this example to understand how the property works.
