Return of Raphael

A Lost Masterpiece Inspires a New Generation

Proof of concept

When Raphael’s Portrait of a Young Man disappeared from Kraków’s Princes Czartoryski Museum during the Second World War, it left behind one of art history’s most haunting absences - an empty frame and a mystery that endures to this day. Eighty years later, that void has become a source of inspiration rather than loss.

The Return of Raphael competition invited artists from around the world to create self-portraits inspired by the missing masterpiece using the innovative Glaze app, a digital twin of the technique of traditional oil painting. The response was extraordinary: 1,250 entries from participants aged seven to seventy-seven, each reimagining Raphael’s vision through contemporary eyes.

The initiative aims to nurture a lasting appreciation for art among future generations, blending classical inspiration with digital innovation. By encouraging artists to paint themselves in dialogue with Raphael, the competition revives the Renaissance practice of close observation and introspection - the art of truly seeing.

An international jury selected the winners: Brett Renfer

(The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York), Candida Lodovica de Angelis Corvi (Colnaghi Foundation), Dean Phelus (American Alliance of Museums), Klaudia Ofwona Draber (Finnish Institute of Culture, Sotheby’s Institute of Art, New York), and Tomasz Ostrowski (National Museum in Kraków).

The works of finalists and winners will be exhibited from 8

December 2025 at the Princes Czartoryski Museum in Kraków (a branch of the National Museum in Kraków), displayed near Leonardo da Vinci’s Lady with an Ermine - another jewel of the collection once imperiled by war. In the same galleries that still await Raphael’s return, where his original frame still hangs empty, new self-portraits will now take their place in dialogue with the Renaissance.

Through Glaze, technology becomes a bridge across

centuries - allowing Raphael’s spirit, and the curiosity it inspires, to live again.
