Adding Observers to Canvas

This video covers how to create a Canvas Observer Accounts for parents. Observer accounts are essential to families for monitoring student progress and grades.

This Google Doc (Adding an Observer Account) explains the process to add a parent to your Canvas Account in a written format so that parents can help you monitor your assignments and grades.

Global Navigation Menu

The Global Navigation menu takes you to your account settings, your Dashboard where you can see all of your Canvas Courses that you have “starred”, your Course list which shows all published, unpublished, and past enrolled courses, your calendar which shows descriptions and due dates for assignments and events, and your inbox which functions as your communication between your class and you.

Course Navigation Menu

Use the Course Navigation Menu to navigate individual Canvas Courses. This menu may look different for each of your courses depending on how your teachers set up their Canvas Course.

Ask your teachers to review the most used features in Canvas for your specific class.

Check your inbox when you log into Canvas

Click this icon to compose new messages

To compose a message, choose the course and select who you would like to message

Then add a subject line that identifies why you are writing a message.

Include a polite introduction to your message before asking for help or asking questions

Attach files/media if neeeded

Click on title of assignments for more information such as due dates and instructions. You can even open the Canvas Assignment page by clicking the titles in the Calendar

Check these boxes to display different courses on your calendar. You can show all your courses at once, or check one course at a time.

Canvas Announcements

Canvas Announcements is a great tool for teachers to make class wide messages to all students. These announcements can be seen by students when they click the “Announcement” Button in the Course Navigation Menu. Be sure to check your announcements everyday!

Modules

Modules allow instructors to organize content to help control the flow of the course.

Modules are used to organize course content by weeks, units, or a different organizational structure. Modules essentially create a one-directional linear flow of what students should do in a course.

Click on the quiz, check Quiz settings - due date, total points, questions

After opening the Quiz, check the settings such as “Allowed Attempts” and be sure to read the instructions

Once your teacher has completed grading your Quiz, come back to this page to view your score and any teacher feedback.

Check the status of your assignment.

  • No status = turned in on time
  • Late = late submission
  • Missing = missing submission

Check your scores here. You can even “Click to test a different score” and add any score to see what your overall grade would be if you scored higher/lower on an assignment/assessment
