What are the O Antiphons?

The O Antiphons are seven titles of Jesus that are prayed during the week leading up to Christmas Eve starting on December 17th. These titles are probably best known through the hymn O Come, O Come Emmanuel, but have been used by Christians since around the 8th century. The O Antiphons are specifically prayed during the Liturgy of the Hours, but are a beautiful reflection for any type of prayer during the last days of Advent. They tie together Old Testament Prophecy and their fulfillment in Christ, asking Jesus to come to us- in Bethlehem, in our hearts, and at the end of time.

On the following seven slides, you will find a short Bible study on each of the O Antiphons. You will read one short passage from the Old Testament and one from the New Testament to compare.
In the Old Testament passage, you should be looking for promises God had made about who the Messiah would be and what He would do.
In the New Testament passage, you then should read for information showing that Jesus fulfilled that prophecy about the Messiah.
The passages given are often very short- only one or two verses. You might need to read a little more to understand the context of the passage.
Think deep and be specific in your descriptions.
Finally, complete the reflection about the title of Jesus that struck you the most during the study.
