Station 1

(Tim)

Primary Sources

  • Objectives: Students will study primary documents to become familiar with the slave trade, runaway slaves, and The Underground Railroad.
  • Assessment/Product: Responses to Google Slide and physical copies of primary documents
  • Materials: Google presentation with primary sources, digital devices, question guide, and paper copies of primary documents
  • Direct Instruction: Stations reviewed during initial presentation
  • Modeling and Guided Practice: Primary sources presentation, Paper copies of additional documents
  • Independent Practice: Question guide
  • Strategies for Differentiation and Extension: Paper copies of additional primary documents available at station for extension. Read-aloud available from aide or librarian.

Station 2: Writing

(Cassidy)

  • Objectives: Students will think reflectively about the importance of family stories and how they can be preserved/shared.
  • Product: Written response (on paper) + class word cloud contribution
  • Materials: Written response handout for each student; iPad(s) + projector screen; activated Poll Everywhere word cloud; pens/pencils
  • Direct Instruction: The librarian will introduce each station prior to rotating. Printed directions will be available at the station.
  • Guided Practice: Students will share/bounce ideas with station members briefly before beginning their independent response.
  • Independent Practice: Each student will respond to the question with a written response followed by contributing to the class word cloud
  • Strategies for Differentiation and Extension: Computer-based option as paper/pencil alternative; read aloud/scribe available

Station 3

(Anida)

Family History

  • Objectives: Students will develop awareness of different types of families by sharing their family traditions, traits, heritage, and culture.
  • Product: paper craft (see photo), digital or paper family story worksheet.
  • Materials: construction paper, pre-cut leaves/hearts, pencils, markers, scissors, glue, completed sample for reference.
  • Direct Instruction: The Librarian will introduce each station prior to rotating. Printed directions will be available at the station.
  • Guided Practice: The Librarian will help students trace their hand and forearm. Students will work in groups of 4-6 and discuss how families are different and all families have their own story. The librarian will guide students in a discussion about similarities and differences.
  • Independent Practice: Students will create their individual family tree story by writing their facts on the leaves and will then glue them on to form the top of the tree.
  • Strategies for differentiation and extension: assistance with spelling and writing (dictation to scribe as needed), pre-cut leaves/hearts, assistance with tracing, read-aloud of directions, peer helpers, assistance with cutting and gluing as needed.

Station 4

(Lia)

Art/Quilting

  • Objectives: Students will determine connections between Jacqueline Woodson’s Show Way and their own families and homes. Students will identify the components necessary to create personally-sized “Show Way” four-block quilts that provide direction to students’ safe spots/special places/homes; students will use various materials to create the quilts.
  • Product: Four-block quilts.
  • Materials: Completed craft sample/laminated photos of previous examples; paper and fabric; glue (two types); scissors; cardstock/foam core board (for mounting work for display).
  • Direct Instruction: The librarian will present read-aloud of Show Way as background and springboard. Librarian will introduce each station prior to rotating. Printed directions will be available at the station.
  • Guided Practice: Students will work in trios to read instructions and model techniques.
  • Independent Practice: Each student will create a personal “Show Way” four-block quilt using the provided supplies.
  • Strategies for Differentiation and Extension: Pre-cut shapes, visual cues/directions, and additional modeling/assistance can be provided as needed.

Evaluation

Following the story station lesson in the library, students will be given this self-evaluation to complete in their classroom/remotely on their Chromebooks. The responses will be automatically collected and available to the librarian to review as they are submitted.
