The jobs are broken up into various groups that pertain to the type of job they are (Law Enforcement, Corrections, Legal, Scientific/Forensic, Social Services, & Other). The more common jobs are at the top of the categories with the unique or less common towards the end. Within each category there is a variety of jobs at the federal, state, and county level.

The following jobs are EXAMPLES, and when you are looking to apply for a specific job make sure to check the agencies specific requirements. With that said, the jobs are general, and the requirements/qualifications and pay may change with various skills that you may possess, or it may change with the number of years you have been in a position or years of experience in the field. If you don’t have the required degree or qualification for a certain job, some employers will still consider you if you can show how your degree can relate or help you in that position.

Law Enforcement

Police Officer 1

1 Description

Police officers are sworn to protect and serve the communities in which they live and work. They enforce laws, obtain warrants, issue citations, make arrests and interview suspects. Officers also spend part of their time writing reports and filling out forms. Rookie officers can work their way up to higher positions such as a homicide detective or lieutenant.

THe candidate will first need to pass the law enforcement entrance exam. Exam includes physical test and written exam. In Oregon you get hired on at a police station and then you will go to the police academy. Other states require you to complete the police academy before being hired. A bachelor’s degree can be earned if those wish to be more of an advanced law enforcement position, and those who have a degree still stand out during the hiring process.

State Trooper 2

1 Description

State troopers help enforce traffic safety and motor vehicle laws on the highway and interstates. They respond to accidents where they will do an investigation. They also prepare court reports and testify in court. State troopers are backup for local and county officers. Depending on what state you work for a state trooper may also be referred to as highway patrol or state patrol.

A high school diploma is required, but some agencies want officers to have an associate degree or higher. Also, some find that having military experience is helpful as well. Candidates will need to complete a physical examination, drug test, polygraph exam, and a background investigation before completing a state trooper training academy. Once the academy is done and you are hired, on the job training will occur.

Detective

1 Description

Detectives are specialized in a certain area of crime, and they do a variety of tasks. Some of these tasks are interview witnesses and victims, gather evidence, prepare search and arrest warrants, question suspects, make arrests, and when necessary, testify in court. Unlike police officers, detectives wear plain clothes and drive unmarked cars. A lot of the time detectives work on detailed investigations, and they can sometimes go undercover or work through an informant. Police detectives are also known as criminal investigators.

A high school diploma or GED is needed, but some places require bachelor’s degrees. Degrees in criminology, criminal justice, psychology, and human services are all good; classes that focus on leadership and problem-solving are ideal as well. Clean criminal record and physically fit candidates will have an interview, background check, and drug screening. After passing all those the candidate will need to go through the police academy. After graduation from the academy the candidate will be a police officer until they are promoted to the detective position.

1 Description

Fish and Game Wardens patrol designated regions for potential illegal activities, enforce policies that protect native species and wildlife, and issuing warnings. Wardens can work in many environments such as lakes, rivers, beaches, wetlands, coastlines, deserts, and backcountry. The wardens can be employed through the state or federally. Wardens are able to cite people, conduct investigations, collect evidence, and search homes or vehicles.

1 Description

FBI agents are the federal government’s chief investigators who work to protect the U.S. from domestic terrorism and enforcing federal laws. Special agents can be divided into the following career paths, intelligence, counterintelligence, counterterrorism, criminal, and cyber. Agents must be willing to participate in arrests, raids, search warrants, and other dangerous activities.

DEA agents investigates crime rings associated with drug imports and related violent crimes. Specifically they focused on those who grow, manufacture, and distribute drugs and illegal substances. Their main goal is to interrupt drug flow before it reaches users.

The CIA is an independent federal agency that provides national security intelligence to U.S. policymakers involving foreign countries and their citizens. Tje work of the CIA involves carrying out an “intelligence cycle”, which includes collection, analyzing, and dissemination intelligence information to government officials. The CIA has no law enforcement function, instead focusing its efforts on collecting and analyzing information that may be crucial to the formation of U.S. policy, particularly in the area of national security.

1 Description

ATF agents uncovers illegal activities which break federal regulations surrounding alcohol, tobacco, firearms, arson, and explosives. ATF agents will also conduct fire and arson investigations. Job duties include surveillance, interviewing suspects, searching for evidence, and making arrests.

1 Description

Marshalls are the oldest of the federal law enforcement agency, and they conduct fugitive investigations, operate the witness protection program, transportation of federal prisoners, protection of the federal judiciary, and in charge of seizing, managing, selling and distributing assets that belong to convicted felons, There are three areas that someone could work in, fugitive operations, judicial security, and tactical operations.

Basic training for the job if at the FLET Academy which is in Georgia. Being in excellent physical condition is important as well. An interview, medical examination, and background check is part of the hiring process. This process can take between 9-12 months.

1 Description

Air Marshals are under the guidance of the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), and they provide security on airlines. They help protect passengers and crew members from hijackings, terrorist activity, and hostile acts. Some of the job duties are participating in criminal investigations, executing search & arrest warrants, conducting interviews, and they represent the U.S. government in foreign countries. Air Marshals also serve as assistant federal security for law enforcement at airports across the country.

Transportation Security Administration Agent (TSA) 11

1 Description

TSA agents work in airports, train stations, subways, and shipping areas where they screen passengers, luggage, and cargo. Screening can make up of x-rays, handheld metal detectors, physical searches, cameras, surveillance, and use canines. Advancement opportunities to a TSA trainer, bomb appraisal officer, or transportation security manager are available depending on ones performance.

Customs Inspectors work with Homeland Security and law enforcement agencies to ensure people and items crossing the borders of the U.S. do not pose any threats. This may include inspecting of citizenship and passport along with enforcing trade regulations though local, state, city, and county law enforcement. A customs inspector will work with a wide variety of agencies such as the FBI, local law enforcement, DEA, and freight companies when looking at cargo.

Profilers use details from crimes such as evidence and witness testimony to help develop psychological portrait of a suspect. This profile helps law enforcement agencies to identify the suspect. Some agencies use the term Behavioral Analysis since the profiler identifies the suspects behaviors, personality and biographical characteristics.

They also help offenders better themselves, and help them transition into a productive lifestyle. POs help make sure the probationers are following their conditions of probation. They can do this by doing home visits, meeting with family members, and using electronic monitoring. POs will do pre-trial investigations, provide courtroom testimony, and work with various outside resources that can help offenders as well.

Classification officers are those who make decisions on where inmates are housed. They review records, interviews inmates, and are trained in psychology. They help answer any questions that an inmate might have and set up referrals for psychological or social services. With new inmates they talk to them about work experience, education, social status, family background, health history, and mental/physical health. They also look at any past criminal history along with the current charges.

1 Description

An inmate records keeper specializes in keeping track of the activities within an entire prison. They may adjust prison sentences based on inmate behavior and other factors. A record keeper holds a steady watch on other aspects, as well. They may oversee job duties or make recommendations to the IT staff. Inmate records coordinators understand human behavior patterns and must be able to predict how well a prisoner will take to being released. They must be comfortable spending a great deal of time with people who commit crimes and must be vigilant and prepared for outburst or violent behavior.

Bailiffs can work in a local, state, or federal courtroom by maintains the orderly proceedings of a courtroom. Bailiffs also guard the juries, announces the judge’s arrival and departure. They also call witnesses to the stand, present the oath, and sometimes they provide administrative support.

1 Description

A court reporter uses a stenographic machine to quietly transcribe the events of a trial. They concentrate on capturing all words correctly while typing with great efficiency without distraction. Court reporters must consistently appear on time and work with great focus for long periods of time before filing the transcriptions. Additional responsibilities include reading the transcripts back during a trial, maintaining the court calendar, answering phones, or assisting jury members.

Court reporters generally require two years of college. Some states require a professional license, and the training program will prepare the candidate for the test which usually is a written exam.
