“The guardian spirit of the Persian kingdom appears under the form of a ram with clean feet and sharp-pointed horns, and… the Persian king, when he stood at the head of his army, bore, instead of the diadem, the head of a ram.” Friedrich Keil
"And he will make a firm covenant with the many for one week, but in the middle of the week he will put a stop to sacrifice and grain offering; and on the wing of abominations will come one who makes desolate, even until a complete destruction, one that is decreed, is poured out on the one who makes desolate." - Dan 9:27
It even magnified itself to be equal with the Commander of the host; and it removed the regular sacrifice from Him, and the place of His sanctuary was thrown down. - Dan 8:11
And a host will be given over to it together with the regular burnt offering because of transgression, and it will throw truth to the ground, and it will act and prosper. Dan 8:12 ESV

So he came (Gabriel) near to where I was standing, and when he came I was frightened and fell on my face; but he said to me, "Son of man, understand that the vision pertains to the time of the end”.
Now while he was talking with me, I sank into a deep sleep with my face to the ground; but he touched me and made me stand upright.
He said, "Behold, I am going to let you know what will occur at the final period of the indignation, for it pertains to the appointed time of the end”. - Dan 8:17-19

“The key to understanding chapters 7 through 12 of Daniel’s prophecy is to understand that Daniel is focusing his attention on this one great ruler and his kingdom which will arise in the end time. And while Daniel may use historical reference and refer to events which to us may be fulfilled, Daniel is thinking of them only to give us more details about this final form of Gentile world power and its ruler who will reign on the earth. This passage in Daniel 8 is speaking not only of Antiochus in his desolation and his desecration of the Temple; it is looking forward to the great desolator who would come….” J. Dwight Pentecost

Pentecost’s summary of verses 23-25:
1) He is to appear in the latter times of Israel’s history (vs23a)
Pentecost’s summary of verses 23-25:
1) He is to appear in the latter times of Israel’s history (vs23a)
2) He is extremely intelligent and convincing and through alliance with other nations, he achieves worldwide influence. The only adequate explanation of verse 24 and of the facts of history is that Antiochus Epiphanes was demon possessed. In this respect he is also a picture of the coming Antichrist who is characterized by Satanic control (vs23b-24a).

Daniel is a good example for students of prophecy (you and I) to follow. He asked the Lord for the explanation and allowed the Lord to instruct him. But his investigation into God’s prophetic program wasn’t a matter of satisfying curiosity or trying to appear very knowledgeable before others. W. Wiersbe

He was concerned about his people and the work they had to do on earth. He so identified with what he learned that it made him ill! Too many “prophetic students” don’t wait before God for instruction and insight, nor do they feel burdened when they learn God’s truth about the future. Instead, they try to display their “knowledge” and impress people with what they think they know. The whole exercise is purely academic; it’s all in the head and never changes the hearts. W. Wiersbe

Most Christians today do not want to hear a word from God if it is like Daniel chapter 8. The reason is American Christians want the truths of God’s Word made clear and most of all having practical applications that make us more successful and cause us to feel more fulfilled. We want a word from God which is affirming and that reassures that there are only good things ahead. That is not what Daniel’s vision communicates.
