Edubuntu is a version of Ubuntu for childrens learning�It is a free, modern and mature operating system with many applications for preschool children, well suited�editors for text and pictures and pedagogical games to give children media literacy.
IT has a plethora of applications; Open Office, Scribus, VlC, Audacity, Gimp well maching not free applications Versions of fx. Picasa, Skype, Chrome och Firefox are available. USB-sticks, cameras, writers
etc are easy to use.
You can also have 5 Gb free cloud space connected to the computer, UbuntuOne
There is thousands of applications to install in Edubuntu, as easy as installing an App in a smartphone.
According to the 5 years experience within Fosie city district Edubuntu is stable, economical, easy and quick to install and maintain. It allows for a low costs children and students to have access to computers and allows you to use computer resources better.�In some schools and preschools the teachers are installing the computers.�The goal is that the teachers themselves become familiar with the technology and have full control over their "educational software" with the children.

This guide is intended as a means to easily install an Edubuntu computer for children in pre school and school�The version used is 10:04, it is a "Long Time Support" version that came in 2010 and maintained for 3 years.�To Edubuntu 10:04 to work well requires a PC with a minimum:�- 1GHz processor�- 512 MB of internal memory (RAM)�- 8 GB of hard disk space�- Graphics card capable of resolution 1024 x 768�- Sound Card�- Internet connection (with power cord during installation)�--DVD player (to install from DVD)�The better the PC, the smoother functioning Edubuntu, but as you see it need not be new or sharp.�The guide does not claim to bee complete, but is based on the experience that exists within Fosie City District, Child

English and Swedish language files are installed for GCompris and Childsplay. If you want to select another language you need to install the language files .��The idea of "Fosiedistro" is that it should be simple to install and use in educational activities.

To use the Edubuntu DVD
When you burned the disc, restart the computer from the disc.�It is a so-called "LiveDVD" that you can start and use the operating system directly from the DVD disc without installing it.�So you can look at it and try before you install. This works only in English.�If you create something you want to save, you can store it on a USB-stick.

Make sure your computer is connected to the internet (if your language is not English) so your language files are downloaded during installation.

Now the system is getting time from a time server

Set your location, sometimes you have to adjust the time afterwords when you have installed, if the time in your location is not correct.

Choose Keyboard layout, usually the suggested option is ok for you.

Here you should decide how the system should be installed and there are different�options. If only want to use Edubuntu and delete everything else choose�"Erase and use entire disk"

Choose the login name, password and computer name. Fill out and think�that this user can administrate the system. When the system is installed,�you can add other users, children who will use the computer.

Now comes a description of the settings that you selected, check that it is ok then will the�system will be installed as described.

Now Edubuntu installs, it takes about 20-30 minutes (it can vary, depending on the computer you are installing)�so it's fine to take a coffee break now.
Installation is ready, reboot the computer
Now you can reboot,, you do not have to worry about the two new icons that have appeared;�"Install LTSP" is to install a server.�"Install Netbook Interface" is to install an interface for small Netbook screens.

Now the screen goes dark and look like the image below.�Take out the DVD, press "ENTER" and it starts up with Edubuntu installed
Log in on the computer
You will see a login window
Click on the
username
Write the password and

This is the desktop when you login.
-The menus are at the top left, and a taskbar at the bottom.�-To change the location, right click on the bars and change the properties.�-There are a lot of menus under the "System" to change the settings, appearance and to administrate the computer and add users.

Update Edubuntu
It takes quite a long time to update the first time, so choose a good time when you do not�need to use your computer, or prepare yourself for a very long coffee break. Then�you restart your computer.
