History

Metropolitan High School was founded in 2005 and in 2016 merged with the former Peace and Diversity High School.

Since then Metropolitan High School has served its community through rigorous academic programs and extracurricular activities.

Our Vision

Metropolitan High School strives to build a learning environment that is challenging and supportive, so students can build their intellectual curiosity, social skills, and self confidence.

Our Mission

Metropolitan High School will design positive student-centered instruction through hands-on learning, inquiry, and multiple opportunities for revision. We will create a supportive learning environment through community partnerships, family involvement, and character development. By doing so our students will graduate with the skills to be thoughtful risk takers, self-advocates, and contributing citizens.

Metropolitan High School features modern facilities that support your learning and personal growth. Our top priority is to ensure that all students feel safe and included in every part of school life.

Student Support Services

At Metropolitan High School, we are committed to providing students with strong academic and social-emotional support to help them succeed.

Our Support Team:

  • Our guidance department includes a school counselor and a social worker. They meet with students for counseling, academic help, and attendance support. They also work with parents to provide family support as needed.

Tutoring Services:

  • We offer tutoring during the day and after school with teachers to help students with their studies.

College and Career Guidance:

  • Alongside our school counselor, Phipps Neighborhoods provides students with college and career counseling and resources.
  • We also partner with CUNY, where a CUNY advisor is available to assist students through the college application process.

Programming

Academic Opportunities at Metropolitan High School

At Metropolitan High School, we provide challenging academic courses that meet New York State requirements, helping students earn Regents and Advanced Regents Diplomas.

Additional Programs:

  • Early Graduation: Students have the option to graduate early in January.
  • Special Courses: We offer programs in EMT, Computer Science, cooking, and plumbing.

College and Career Paths:

  • CollegeNow Track: Partnering with Lehman College for college-level courses.
  • Trades Track: Collaboration with Co-op Tech for hands-on training.

Our students enjoy the benefits of a small school environment while connecting with various community partnerships to enhance their education.

College & Career Readiness

At Metropolitan High School, students can earn Career and Technical Education (CTE) certifications through Co-op Technical School. Co-op Tech provides certifications in various fields, including construction, medical coding, and cosmetology. Once students finish their courses, they receive valuable certifications that can help them in their future careers.

Additionally, we offer the College Now Program in partnership with Lehman College. This program allows students to take college courses for free after school and on weekends. The credits earned can be transferred to many colleges after graduation, giving students a head start on their college education!

The School Leadership Team (SLT) Parent Events, and Parent Participation

Who? The SLT is a group of admin, staff, parents, and students who help make important decisions about teaching and learning at our school.

What? The SLT…

  • ensures that we have the resources we need to support those decisions.
  • reviews programs to see see how they’re helping students succeed, as connected to the school’s vision, goals, and budget.

When? The SLT meets every month in person and/or on Zoom.

The Parent Teacher Association (PTA) is a group made up of parents, students, teachers, school leaders, and community members. Everyone in the PTA works together to encourage family participation in school activities and to help all kids do their best in school.

PHIPPS Neighborhood

Metropolitan High School partners with Phipps Neighborhoods, a community based organization that has been supporting the Bronx since 1972.

Programs Offered:

  • After-School Programs: Fun and educational activities after school.
  • Ambassador Internships: Opportunities to gain real-world experience.
  • Summer Jobs: SYEP (Summer Youth Employment Program) for summer work experience.

Phipps Neighborhoods collaborates with our school staff to encourage attendance by providing exciting incentives for students and families, such as trips, gift cards, and special events.

They also offer support for students through social-emotional and academic programs, helping everyone succeed!

DYCD Compass High After School

The Comprehensive Afterschool System of NYC (COMPASS) formerly known as the Out-of-School Time (OST) Program is comprised of over 890 programs serving young people enrolled in grades K-12.

COMPASS aims to help young people build skills to support their academic achievement, raise their confidence and cultivate their leadership skills through service learning and other civic engagement opportunities.

21st Century Program

The 21st Century Community Learning Centers (CCLC) program is the only federal funding source dedicated to supporting after school and local summer learning programs through the US Department of Education. Grants support afterschool and summer learning programs that provide the following services to students attending high-poverty, low-performing schools:
