Planning with clarity of purpose

Think about and plan for

  • What will the students be learning to do (visit the curriculum often)
  • How will they and I know they are learning (what are the expectations and how to meet them)
  • How will we assess/report (checklist, rubric, anecdotal notes, etc)

Clarity of purpose is really important so that the details can fall into place and/or you know what to do and let go of

Learning routines

Setting up routines is helpful for so many reasons: creating safety and predictability, providing opportunities for improvement, lessening the planning load, etc.

Keep in mind that repetition is good. And this repetition allows you to add layers of complexity when ready with a familiar framework.

Having routines in place can also maximize learning time because less need to be sorting/instructing on the mechanics of the lesson as in making teams/groups or getting materials, etc.

    • Make a code like @=NAME, #=he/she/they, $=him/her/their etc; then use find and replace tool to populate names and pronouns
    • Remember what parents want to read: I know your child, I like your child, I’m finding ways to help your child learn
  • ASSESSMENT IDEAS:
    • Thumbs up/down
    • Exit tickets
    • video/audio files to watch as a class to look for awesomeness (you assess while whole class is watching/listening-works great during “instructional eating” time
