Support Organization and Focus

BEST FOR: Students with weaker Attention and Working Memory

WHAT IT IS: Students can struggle with following directions, organizational skills and follow-through for a variety of reasons. Teach them how to do this as it might not be natural or obvious to them what they can do differently.

WHAT TO KNOW

  • Students with weaker executive functions can feel easily overloaded. Be clear and concise when modeling, giving guidance or instruction
  • Managing work requires more effort in remote learning than it usually does in a traditional classroom. Support students with structure, including predictable routines and a regular schedule
  • Telling them to do things usually doesn’t work. Expect to show them how or do it with them several times before they begin to adopt new approaches independently

HOW TO SUPPORT:

  • Help students organize their work space and clean up on a regular basis
  • Set a consistent location for completing academic work, but incorporate change of location when possible for other activities (outdoors, bedroom, etc.)
  • Don’t let them multi-task. No electronics while doing school work
  • Use a daily planner and checklists to keep track of their assignments
  • Set a daily routine to ensure all assignments are done and in an order that will show their best work
  • Schedule stretch breaks a minimum of every 20 minutes
  • Provide a fidget toy for students who can’t manage their energy
  • Remove outside distractions so they can focus
  • Teach students to recognize the signs that they are losing focus so they can manage their attention independently without adults constantly reminding them. Middle and high school students can use this attention checklist
