Jesus is the Resurrection: Do You Believe This?
JOHN 11:17-27
17 When Jesus arrived, he found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb four days. 18 Bethany was near Jerusalem (less than two miles away). 19 Many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary to comfort them about their brother. (John 11:17-18)
20 As soon as Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went to meet him, but Mary remained seated in the house. 21 Then Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother wouldn’t have died. 22 Yet even now I know that whatever you ask from God, God will give you.” (John 11:20-22)
23 “Your brother will rise again,” Jesus told her.
24 Martha said to him, “I know that he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day.”
25 Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me, even if he dies, will live. 26 Everyone who lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?”
27 “Yes, Lord,” she told him, “I believe you are the Messiah, the Son of God, who comes into the world.”
(John 11:23-27)
21 Then Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother wouldn’t have died. 22 Yet even now I know that whatever you ask from God, God will give you.” (John 11:21-22)
Come With Your Grief, Find Your Trust
APPLICATION POINT #1
“Martha is not only persuaded that her brother would not have died had Jesus been present, but even now, in her bereavement, she has not lost her confidence in Jesus, and still recognizes the peculiar intimacy he enjoys with his Father, an intimacy that ensures unprecedented fruitfulness to his prayers.”
D. A. Carson, The Gospel according to John, The Pillar New Testament Commentary
9 I will say to God, my rock,“Why have you forgotten me?Why must I go about in sorrowbecause of the enemy’s oppression?”10 My adversaries taunt me,as if crushing my bones, while all day long they say to me,“Where is your God?” (Psalm 42:9-10)
1 I cry aloud to the Lord;I plead aloud to the Lord for mercy.2 I pour out my complaint before him;I reveal my trouble to him. (Psalm 142:1-2)
“Trust in him at all times, you people;pour out your hearts before him.God is our refuge. Selah” (Psalm 62:8)
It is possible to start with grief and transition to faith in our prayers. We can start with tears and anguish and then receive the peace of God and then reiterate our faith in the One who is trustworthy.
11 Why, my soul, are you so dejected? Why are you in such turmoil?Put your hope in God, for I will still praise him,my Savior and my God. (Psalm 42:11)
5 I cry to you, Lord;I say, “You are my shelter,my portion in the land of the living.” (Psalm 142:5)
7 Free me from prisonso that I can praise your name. The righteous will gather around mebecause you deal generously with me. (Psalm 142:7)
“Though He slay me, yet will I trust Him.Even so, I will defend my own ways before Him.” (Job 13:15, NKJV)
Application
Be vulnerable before the Lord. In your heartache and pain, don’t be afraid to tell Him how you feel.
But after you have poured out your heart before Him, see that He raises your head to see Him and then say, “Yet I know.” Even through hardship, give Him your trust.
23 “Your brother will rise again,” Jesus told her.
24 Martha said to him, “I know that he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day.” (John 11:23-24)
The Resurrection at the Last Day
THEOLOGICAL POINT #1
“For the Sadducees say there is no resurrection, and neither angel nor spirit, but the Pharisees affirm them all.” (Acts 28:3)
“Your dead will live; their bodies will rise.Awake and sing, you who dwell in the dust! For you will be covered with the morning dew, and the earth will bring out the departed spirits.” (Isaiah 26:19)
Jesus’s Clues of the Future Resurrection
28 “Do not be amazed at this, because a time is coming when all who are in the graves will hear his voice 29 and come out—those who have done good things, to the resurrection of life, but those who have done wicked things, to the resurrection of condemnation.” (John 5:28-29)
“Truly I tell you, an hour is coming, and is now here, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live.” (John 5:25)
John 5:25, 28-29 and John 6:39-40, 44, 54
“51 But let me reveal to you a wonderful secret. We will not all die, but we will all be transformed! 52 It will happen in a moment, in the blink of an eye, when the last trumpet is blown. For when the trumpet sounds, those who have died will be raised to live forever. And we who are living will also be transformed. 53 For our dying bodies must be transformed into bodies that will never die; our mortal bodies must be transformed into immortal bodies.” (1Cor. 15:51-53, NLT)
“contrary to the teaching that believers enter into a state of “soul sleep,” or unconscious resting, until the day of Christ’s return, the Bible teaches that we will enter into conscious communion with Christ upon death. As Jesus told the thief on the cross, “Today you will be with me in paradise” (Luke 23:43).”
Ben Dunson, Desiring God
Application
25 Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me, even if he dies, will live. 26 Everyone who lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?” (John 11:25-26)
The Hope and the Promise of the Resurrection through Christ
APPLICATION POINT #2
The Three Components to Jesus’ Declaration
Jesus is the resurrection and the life. Jesus has been given the authority to give resurrection life upon whomever He wills.
The person who believes in him will come to life (spiritually) even though that person will die (physically).
People who live and believe in him will never die. Not even death can break their relationship with God.
