The Case of the Gasping Garbage
XL
1
Intro.
Drake Doyle and Nell Fossey were two friends in fifth grade. They are science detectives known for their relentless pursuit of the right answers.
2
Problem
Gabby Talberg, Drake and Nell’s fifth grade classmate, calls screaming that there is a monster in the garbage can! Gabby tells him that her garbage can makes all kinds of weird gasping noises.
3
Next
Science detectives Doyle and Fossey went to Gabby’s house to examine her gasping garbage can. They notice that the garbage sounded hollow, smelled like fresh baked bread, and wasn’t heavy. They also knew that Gabby’s father was a baker and he used to throw things away in the garbage.
4
Solution
They took the garbage back to their laboratory for more precise analysis. After performing experiments and making observations, Drake and Nell discovered the identity of the monster...
5
Resolution
It was yeast! They explained that because the can was stored in a warm environment, the flour and yeast Gabby’s father threw away was able to grow, making bubbles that caused the gasping sounds.
Gabby was a little disappointed because it was an ordinary answer.
