Movement Voices: A Youth-Led Speaker Series

Within Asian American movement building and activist spaces, the process of embodying and acting out the wisdom transferred by movement elders (and “yelders”) across generations is a crucial practice. Passing down activist history and practice is important for the success of the movement for collective liberation and the archival of our shared history for those who will come after us.

Thus, Movement Voices: A Youth-Led Speaker Series intends to build a space for remembering and learning. Through the memories and wisdom passed down by our speakers as they discuss their activist journeys, we hope the process of remembering will lead to learning. We hope folx learn from each speaker’s how and why of organizing: why did they organize and how? In doing so, we hope folx can also take time to delve into their why and how of organizing.

Date: July 22, 2022 / July 29, 2022 / August 5, 2022

Time: 12:00-1:30pm (EST)

Speaker: Dr. Calvin Cheung-Miaw / Soya Jung / Pam Tau Lee

Expectations:

  • 2 youth fellows to research about each week’s speaker and prepare questions (Luna and Thang will support)
  • Every fellow must invite 3-5 people to register for the event
  • “Arrive” at least 30 minutes before the event to do a run-through, meet the speaker, and troubleshoot

5 mins: write what each word means to you on a YELLOW STICKY NOTE on each title of the slides
