The introduction of a new LTS release brings a change to the ACTIVE and MAINTENANCE designation of prior releases. As we can see here… Zowe V1 maintenance ends, Zowe v2 ACTIVE transitions to maintenance and Zowe v3 ACTIVE begins…

What does this mean to you as a consumer? You need to understand the support implications so that you can determine when you need to upgrade.

Zowe consumers on v1 have until end of Sept to upgrade to v2

Those of you on v2 have a decision to make…

Boils down to a few considerations:

Is your organization waiting on a feature slated for the v3 release? OR
Is your organization interested in obtaining the latest features & capabilities at some point over the full ACTIVE release term of v3
OR does your organization prefer to stay on a release that only receives fixes and security updates - this typically is perceived as being less-disruptive - Zowe v2 will remain supported until March of 2027

Version Compatibility and Conformance

Zowe Extensions Compatibility Recommendations:

Verify your Vendor extensions have earned Zowe v3 Conformance (conformance assures interoperability)
Alternatively, (not recommended) verify interoperability with the Vendor

Vendor Support Offerings:

All Zowe v2 Support Providers must re-apply to re-affirm their conformance for Zowe v3. Comprehensive Support Providers MUST support ALL new Zowe Core components introduced with v3 (Zowe Extensions are excluded).

Zowe V3 Supply Chain Security

Producing SPDX 2.2 compliant SBOMs for all Zowe sources used to build our distributions

Get an exact account of whats included in Zowe, all the way down to transitive dependencies.
Will support SPDX 3.x when it graduates to GA
SBOMS will be available via download link from zowe downloads

We will use Sigstore to digitally sign artifacts

Gives us tamper-proof artifacts signed by a public authority
Verifiable anywhere with an internet connection

Zowe JCL

With Zowe v3, the SAMPLIB of Zowe now contains jobs for each operation the shell scripts do during install.

The samples contain {templates} which reference zowe YAML attributes.

A job ZWEGENER can take your YAML, validate it, and then resolve the templates into a second PDS for ready-to-run jobs.

Later in v3, “zwe” will be changed to wrap and execute this JCL-driven approach.

Zowe JCL

ZWEGENER is a job that takes the JCL templates, takes your given Zowe.yaml, and substitutes the templates with zowe.yaml content
The resulting JCL is placed into a second dataset, the instance jcllib
The resulting JCL can be ran directly, with parameters already filled in.
“zwe init generate” can submit this job for you if desired.
Generate can be run any time, to create jobs that are relevant to your instance
SZWESAMP contains portable content, jcllib contains instance content. One is derived from the other.
