Ionospheric scintillation

Solar wind velocity, density/turbulence, and signatures of field rotation and SIRs

Variation in amount of scintillation → density proxy

Cross-correlation of power spectra → velocity

Fit to individual power spectra → velocity etc

Interplanetary scintillation (IPS)

from compact radio source

Faraday rotation (FR) from

polarised radio source

Radio Teams So Far… (UPDATED!)

  • Several teams have registered, more are hopefully forming…
    • S3-04: Radio Observations of the Sun and Heliosphere – led by Pietro Zucca. [No activities?]
    • H1-02: Heliospheric Radio Diagnostics of the Background Solar Wind – led by Richard A. Fallows and Oyuki Chang. [UPDATE: now led by John Morgan and Oyuki Chang]
    • G2b-08: Ground-based and space borne HF-VHF ionospheric investigations – led by Hanna Rothkaehl and Maaijke Mevius. [No activities?]
    • What about G2B-04: Large team led by Norbert Jakowski and Tim Fuller-Rowell? [ACTIVE!!!]
    • H2-0?: Team currently being formed to investigate the use of Faraday rotation to determine the magnetic-field structures of the heliosphere and CMEs – led by Caterina Tiburzi and Mario M. Bisi. [UPDATE: team did not form]
    • Team(s) currently being formed to investigate different background solar wind models and how different drivers affect the end solution(s) based on radio data as the primary input. [???]
    • Other teams are now under consideration… [UPDATE: No additional teams formed…]

The Way Forward… (UPDATED!)

  • The new teams will ensure that they register in the ISWAT system. [PLEASE!!!]
  • Team leads will ensure all team members register in the ISWAT system in conjunction with Cluster Moderators, ensure they are added to their respective team(s).
  • Teams will start to meet separately (telecon and in person) to formulate solid action plans within each team in conjunction with already-extant activities (such as through the LOFAR SSW-KSPs, the LOFAR4SW projects, MWA SHI activities, LOFAR-MWA collaborations, RISER, and current NASA/USAF/NSF funded work, etc…).
  • Teams will look across Clusters to work together when this is more beneficial – such as in cleaning up data sets, writing time applications, etc[Radio is across clusters!]
  • Some teams will submit abstracts for the COSPAR SA in Busan, South Korea, and beyond on their relevant science areas – looking towards COSPAR ISWAT 2025.
  • We need dedicated space-weather observatories or at least modes of operation!!!
