Questionnaire on identifying the general perception/opinion regarding gender gap in STEM/Textile & Clothing Industry

Why?

  • Romania has a very small gap (less 1,2 p. p.) between men and women in the distribution of R&D personnel in the business enterprise sector by occupation;

  • Although the proportion of female researchers has increased in engineering and technology in 29 countries, only in Romania has this increase led to a gender-balanced researcher population (43 %);

  • Romania ranks 26th in the EU with a score of 54,4 p.p, ahead of Greece and Hungary;

Findings of the questionnaire

47% of survey participants have experienced gender inequality at least once, while about 1 in 5 (19%) are not sure if they have.

The percentage of females who have experienced gender inequality at least once is almost double that of males (53% vs. 27%).

Most forms of inequality have been experienced by more women than men.

28% of respondents believe that girls/women are treated equally to boys/men in Romania, while 65% have the opposite opinion.

shemakes.eu | 23

Findings of the questionnaire

45% of the participants in the study mentioned that they very often and frequently encountered the statement that women are not attracted/not good in certain scientific fields because there are biological/neuronal differences between women and men.

The main forms of gender inequality experienced are:

demeaning behaviour (68%)

sexual harassment (46%)

bullying behaviour (45%)

A third of those who experienced gender inequality said it manifested itself in fewer opportunities for promotion, while 23% in lower pay.

Discussion and experiences

Based on the topics discussed, think of times/experiences when you felt supported/hindered in your work?

You can start from something that happened and extract (moment/story). What was the effect on you? What did the situation show/teach you? Did you adapt your behaviour?

Using post-it notes, summarise the characteristics that made you feel supported or hindered. Add them to the board.

25 of 33

shemakes.eu | 25

When talking about a personal experience, don't use names, try to focus on:

- No names, no personalisation, no judgements, no rights or wrongs.

- The concrete/abstract action - which has empowered or hindered you

- Context (familiar/unfamiliar/new/comfortable)

- Your feeling - not someone else's, or why they may or may not have it

- Happening during - training/learning, work, personal life, in public/social environment (personal/public are less important to shemakes)

Gender Equality Plan

GEP

26

27 of 33

Minimum process requirements (building blocks) for a GEP:

Publication: an official document published on the institution's website and signed by the top management.

Dedicated resources: hiring/training human resources and gender expertise for implementation.

2

Data collection and monitoring: gender-disaggregated data on staff (and pupils for the units concerned) and annual reporting based on indicators.

3

Training: Awareness raising/training on gender equality and unconscious gender bias for staff and decision makers.

Content - areas recommended to be covered and addressed by actions and targets

  • work-life balance and organisational culture

2

  • gender equality in recruitment and career development;

3

integrating the gender dimension into the research and teaching content;

* measures against gender-based violence, including sexual harassment.

A gender equality plan can be divided into different stages or phases:

  • Analysis - where gender-disaggregated data is collected; procedures, processes and practices are critically evaluated to detect gender inequalities and gender bias;

  • Planning - in which objectives are defined, targets are set, actions and measures to remedy identified problems are decided, resources and responsibilities are assigned and deadlines are agreed;

2

  • Implementation - where activities are implemented and outreach efforts are undertaken among personnel;

3

  • Monitoring, where process and progress are tracked and evaluated on a regular basis. Findings from monitoring allow interventions to be adjusted and improved so that their results are optimised.
