French International School of Hong KongOne school, two streams

At FIS, we are a multicultural school, offering diverse curricula built upon values of global mindedness, critical thinking and personal development. Our mission is to energise young minds, prepare independent and compassionate life-long learners and inspire our students to achieve their full potential. We reach our goals by providing a collaborative and stimulating bilingual learning environment where all members of our community are valued and respected.

A Multilingual Education: Language learning has always been a great priority of FIS, with most of our students bi-lingual or trilingual at the end of their studies.

The School

The French International School, Hong Kong is a dual-system school with 2,900 students taught on 4 campuses. We have an inclusive French Stream taught in French and a selective International Stream taught in English with separate Heads of the French and International Streams under the supervision of a whole-school Headmaster.

FIS was founded in 1963 and was the

first international school in Hong Kong.

In 1988, we became the first school in Hong Kong to offer the International Baccalaureate. Our school has a strong academic emphasis and employs highly qualified expatriate and local staff. There are over 250 teachers from 20 different countries.FIS is linked by Partnership to the Agency for French Teaching Abroad (AEFE), a national administrative body. This partnership guarantees that the French curriculum is taught in conformity with the French Ministry of Education instructions, and allows the school to present students for the national examinations (“Brevet” and “Baccalauréat”).

Students in the International Stream take Cambridge IGCSE and IB Diploma examinations. In the final year of schooling, there are 57 students in International Stream Year 13, and 64 students in the French Stream Terminale.Extra-curricular activities:Students are given the opportunity to join a multitude of activities, ranging from competitive sports (horse riding, track and field, swimming, soccer, basketball, rugby, handball and volleyball), competing against other French schools in the Asia-Pacific region as well as local schools. Other student clubs include: Drama, MUN, the World Scholar’s Cup, Wharton Global Youth Program, Green Club and School Journal.

Grade 13: Students continue with their compulsory courses with French literature replaced with philosophy. Two further math options (complementary and expert) are available in their final year as well as law.

Students continue with 2 of 3 specialisms.Over 40% of students opt for the academically advanced version of the baccalaureate, the BFI (American Section) where 3 additional courses are taught in English: History and Geography, Language and Literature, and Global Issues. During their junior year, they complete an Extended Essay (2500 words). Students in this stream have the option of taking AP European History in their junior year.

Due to the academic nature of our curriculum, students are often in lessons for up to 40 hours a week. This extended timetable coupled with the travel time from being the only French language high school in Hong Kong, can have an impact on the level of students’ extra curricular activities.
