Instructions

On the slides below, you will see a 6x6 wall of numbers and operations. Your goal is to find a string of numbers/operations to match the target number, and the string has to be connected with adjacent cards. For example, if the target number was 16 and we are using the cards on slide 3, we can say “6x2+4” since we can create a path with those numbers going left/right/up/down. Once you found one, say “Got it!” and share your number sentence.

In the card game (http://www.silcom.com/~tomjolly/gotit.htm), we are given cards for our target number but for this online adaptation, you can have a random number generator, or go in order from 1-20, or even/odd progressions with your students.

Two ways I’ve implemented this

  1. For a Saturday session, students played in breakout rooms while one person looked up “random number generator 1-40” to find their target number. They played for 15 minutes with wanting more time!
  2. I also did this as a whole class activity where students would unmute and say “got it!” once they found the target number. To not emphasize speed, I didn’t move on to the next slide until we came up with 2-3 ways to reach that target number. I have the numbers predetermined as seen in slides 7-10.

Did you like this game?

Buy the cards here: http://www.silcom.com/~tomjolly/gotit.htm.

This is hands down one of my favorite games to show my students. I bought around 10 sets of these a couple years ago so each group can play their own game. My students love the game and I hope yours do too! - Howie Hua
