What is procrastination ?

To keep delaying something that must be done, often because it is unpleasant or boring.

What are the effects ?

  • The feeling of guilt.
  • The urgency to complete near the deadline.
  • Stops us from giving our best.

Importance

They help to keep track of what must be done.

Benefits

It depends if the person is following them. They can be very effective if one follows it without exceptions.

The exhaustion of working hard and pursuing co curriculars.

BIOLOGICAL

Anemia

It is the disease which is caused by the deficiency of hemoglobin (iron in the blood). Some symptoms are exhaustion spells, cold feet and hands, shortness of breath after some running, etc.

Sugar

Taking sugar slows us down. It powers us up but then after some time you get an energy crash. You should try not to have a sugary food or drink when feel a little tired.

Proteins

They are good source of energy and are also a healthy source.

Periods

So many hormonal changes take place during this time which affect us not only emotionally but physically also. During this time, you can feel very tired and sometimes also suffer through cramps.

Sleep

You should have a fixed routine for sleep as it is a major factor in energy. Depending on age amount of sleep needed changes.

BIOLOGICAL

Caffeine

To much of caffeine can also cause energy crashes. If you have a problem with falling asleep you should cut down caffeine or quit, it. Research proves that caffeine in the morning blocks the hormones from circulating. You should rather have water with a pinch of salt.

Exercise

Exercising 30-60mins a day makes us tired at night and results to a better sleep.

Sunlight

Expose yourself to sunlight within 30-60 mins after waking up. Studying in the presence of sunlight is good for your body.

Doom scrolling

It is the term used for endlessly scrolling on social media. It leads to anxiety and waste of energy and time.

Active and passive rest

When you take a break and can not focus on the work when you start again is called passive rest. This usually happens when you are scrolling the internet. When you take a break and do something productive it is easier focus to start working again.

PSYCHOLOGICAL

Burnout

The way to success is not working on your goal all the time but rather plan time with family and friends and when work only focus on that.

Balance

When you have nothing to look forward to except the never ending to do list, you need to balance it with some time to relax like enjoying small happy things every month, week, or day. Spend time doing hobbies which replenish your motivation and energy and overall you enjoy doing.

Light

Try to lighten up the room while working. Try to go out and study in the sunlight.

Organized surroundings

Keeping a clean and organized surrounding helps focus and effects us in positive ways

Company

Having people who don’t support you like toxic friends and family members can leave a negative impact on you and your work.

WAYS TO MEMORIZE

The look and sound

If you memorize I this way you will most probably forget it by tomorrow morning. The human brain is designed to forget stuff 18 hours after that if it is not important or interesting to you.

The example way

If I give you the example of the word onomatopoeia and the meaning you are most likely to remember it. I would try to come up with scenarios it is easier for me to remember it like, if I take the same example I would remember it by thinking I walked into the washroom and a boy named matto is peeing beside me, I would say oh no matto is peeing ahhh!

POINTS

Point 1: The brain likes surprises.

Point 2: You need to know what do you have to learn.

Point 3: The brain will remember things useful to it.

Point 4: If the environment you try to recall the thing is similar to the environment you memorized it in the more chances of us remembering it.

MNEMONICS

What are mnemonics?

They are mental strategies to improve memory. You can make them by using cringy or disgusting examples which the brain Is more likely to remember.

Types of mnemonics

  • Imagery: to make a image in your mind which describes the thing you need to remember or its meaning.
  • Organization: making visual mind maps or flowcharts. The first letter technique in which you make a word or sentence using the first letters. Eg. VIBGYOR, etc. To remember vocab you can use the narrative technique in which you create a story .

ELABORATION MEMORIZATION TECHNIQUES

Explaining yourself

Try to read the passage and then without looking explain it to yourself. It will tell you if you remember it. It is a form of active reading. This helps us to not zone out while studying.

The Feynman technique

Basically teaching the topic to someone else in easier terms.

Writing

Handwriting notes from the textbook is one of the best ways to remember topics. While doing this one can also draw diagrams or even write mnemonics in the margin.

Why?

Asking and answering why questions can also help in memorization. Questions like why was my answer wrong or, why was the right answer right.

Testing

Science proves that testing knowledge on the material helps memorize it better. This is known as the testing effect.

Active recall

Making your brain search for an answer is called active recall. Flashcards, tests and apps like Feyn, Quizlet and Quizzz

The forgetting curve

90% of information is forgotten by the end of a week. This can be avoided if reviewing is planned so that the brain can revise it again.

Real life situations

Relating things to your real life can help remember it. It is not applicable on somethings like history.

  • They need to be practical.
  • You can make different types of notes like mind maps, flow charts, points, the Cornell method, flashcards, etc.

POMODORO SESSIONS

  • It is a Japanese study technique in which there are study sessions with a fixed amount of breaks and time in both breaks and study sessions.
  • You can use apps or study with me to do this. Eg. Study bunny, etc.

CRAM SESSIONS

  • This is a method of studying in which you sit down and cram all the information and topics.
  • It is not as effective as the other methods. Usually you do this when there is very less time.
