English

Destination Reader

Children will read and analyse Executioner's Daughter (link to our History topic) as well as other seen and unseen texts.

Narrative

They will take the plot and theme from Macbeth to plan and write their own contemporary version.

Non-chronological report

As part of our Whole school project on Sustainability, children will write a non-chronological report on renewable and non-renewable energy sources.

Recount

Children will write a historical journalistic recount focusing on a key event within the Tudor reign.

Discussion

Children will will write a discussion presenting two sides of an argument, following a debate.

Poetry

Children will research a poet, make personal responses to their poetry and recite poems by heart.

Science

Unbalanced forces

Children will learn to describe gravity, water and air resistance and friction. They will work scientifically to analyse data to write conclusions; plan fair tests; design results tables; and evaluate their method. They will also describe the effects of levers, pulleys and simple machines and describe the relationship between lever length and effort.

Human timeline

Children will learn about the changes humans go through as they develop to old age. This will include learning about: the human timeline; the growth of babies; puberty in humans and animals; changes in old age; gestation periods; and life expectancy.

Maths

Converting units of measure

Children will convert between metric units of length, mass, capacity and units of time. They will know and use approximate conversion between imperial and metric units.

Calculating with whole numbers and decimals

Children will use mental strategies to add and subtract involving decimals; use formal written strategies to add, subtract and multiply decimals; multiply and divide by 10, 100 and 1,000 involving decimals; and derive multiplication facts involving decimals.

2D and 3D shape

Children will classify 2-D shapes and reason about regular and irregular polygons; know the properties of diagonals of quadrilaterals; and classify 3D shapes.

Volume

Children will explore cube numbers and the notation. They will estimate volume and convert units of volume.

Problem solving

Children will learn to understand negative numbers and calculate intervals across zero. They will solve problems involving calculating the mean, interpreting remainders and investigate numbers (consecutive, palindromic, multiples)

Computing

Creating media: stop motion Animation

Children will learn what stop motion animation is and plan their own stop motion video before creating one themselves.

Mars Rover 2

The children will recognise how bit patterns represent images as pixels; they will explain how the data for digital images can be compressed; and they will learn to create their own design using CAD software.

French

Verbs

Children will learn that verbs take different forms and begin to recognise some regular verbs in the present tense. They will learn that some verbs do not follow regular patterns. They will deliver a presentation, choosing and using a range of action verbs.

Meet my family

Children will use phrases about brothers and sisters. They will name different family members on a family tree and build descriptive sentences into a short paragraph. They will plan and prepare a short presentation about a family.

RE

We will explore the following questions in two units this term:

How can following God bring freedom and justice?

What matters most to Humanists and Christians?

History

Monarchs

Children will learn what a monarchy is and what it means in terms of governing people in England. They will explore what can be discovered about Henry VIII from his portraits and discover why Henry VIII really broke away from Rome: love or religion? They will explore how life was different for different levels of society living in Tudor times. Children will examine portraits of Elizabeth I and investigate why, as historians, we have to be careful when using the portraits of Elizabeth I to find out about her. Finally, they will discuss how England changed after the end of the Tudor period.

PE

Tennis

They will learn specific skills such as a forehand, backhand, volley and underarm serve.

Football

They will improve their defending and attacking play; begin to develop consistency and control in dribbling, passing and receiving a ball; and learn the basics of goalkeeping.

Athletics

Children will learn the following activities: running over longer distances, sprinting, relay, triple jump, shot put and javelin.

Rounders

Children will develop their fielding skills; throwing underarm and overarm, catching and retrieving a ball. They learn how to play the different roles of bowler, backstop, fielder and batter.

PSHE

Citizenship

Children will learn about the law, rights and responsibilities and parliament.

Economic well being

They will discuss the risks associated with money, make a budget based on priorities and discuss the role of money in selecting a job.

Safety and the changing body

Children will learn about puberty and menstruation.

Transition

The children will prepare for the transition to Year 6 and the opportunities and responsibilities this brings.

Art

Painting and mixed media: portraits

Children will develop their skills in creating interesting portrait drawings using words, experimenting with materials and techniques, and constructing self-portraits that represent aspects of themselves.

Music

Looping and Remixing

They will learn how to loop tunes and combine these to create a remix.

Musical theatre

Children will create, rehearse and perform a musical theatre scene.

Design and Technology

Cooking and nutrition

Children will learn about the process of beef production. They will learn that recipes can be adapted to suit nutritional needs and dietary requirements as well as learning about nutritional information that is found on food packaging. They will prepare and follow a recipe.

Geography

Where does our energy come from?

Children will learn why energy sources are important. They will learn about renewable energy and understand the benefits and drawbacks of different energy sources. They will learn how energy is generated in the United States and the United Kingdom. They will consider the best energy source and explore solar panels on the school ground.

Sustainability (whole school project)

We will be exploring the concept of ‘Sustainability’ and the idea that humans must interact with the environment in a way that ensures there will be enough resources left for future generations.
