Psalm 詩篇 23:4 「因為你與我同在」 "for you are with me"
David moves from speaking about Yahweh to speaking directly to Yahweh his Shepherd.
The Shepherd's presence appears tangibly in what He holds.
1. The rod 杖
1. The rod 杖
a) The rod is a weapon for battle
"…your rod…"
The shepherd's rod was his primary weapon for the protection of the flock against wild animals and human thieves.
The Shepherd of your soul carries royal weight in His hand.
Rev.
Rev.
1. The rod 杖 b) The tool for counting 杖是點數的工具
27:32 And every tithe of herds and flocks, every tenth animal of all that pass under the herdsman's staff [rod], shall be holy to the LORD.
👉 The same wooden weight that breaks the skull of a wolf rests gently across the gate, counting your steps as you come in.
1. The rod 杖 c) The rod secures a promise 杖確保了一個應許
Jesus’ protection
⚠️ Your security rests in His grip on you.
2. The staff 竿
2. The staff 竿
a) The staff directs rather than defends
“…and your staff…”「…
The staff was the shepherd's instrument for governing the flock from within.
The shepherd's staff was the tool he used for caring for the flock as he led them daily toward green grass, water, and rest.
2. The staff 竿
b) The staff corrects the wanderer
🤝 The staff asks something more personal of us, because the staff reaches for us when we ourselves have become the trouble!
Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing
Prone to wander Lord I feel it 我深知道我心易變,Prone to leave the God I love
2. The staff 竿
c) The staff works thru under-shepherds
The Lord entrusts both rod and staff to the leaders of His church, who serve as under-shepherds of the Great Shepherd.
The staff rarely feels like comfort in the moment it lands.
3. The Comfort that gives Courage
3. The Comfort that gives Courage
23:4b "for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me”
3. The Comfort that gives Courage
🤝 More than soothed feelings: Courage—a strength rising in the soul precisely because the Lord is present.
✝️ The rod and the staff are the visible symbols of God's invisible presence.
GOSPEL CONNECTION
At Gethsemane, Gabbatha, Golgotha: The Shepherd gave Himself into the place of danger so that His flock might live.
