What is OT?

Occupational Therapy looks at all components that fulfill a person’s day. That is the time someone wakes up from the time they go to sleep. And everything in between.

An occupational therapist helps aid people across the lifespan in getting them to do the things they need to do (or should be doing) aka Activities of Daily Living (ADLs).

OT is derived from the word “occupations,” which is any activity that occupies your day.

School Based vs. Medical Model

  • Prioritize maximizing a student’s independent participation to access their educational curriculum via individualized educational plans (IEPs)
  • Prioritize collaboration with teachers, administration, SLP, Psych, ABA Therapists, etc
  • Consider a “Least-Restrictive Environment” (LRE) and “Free and Appropriate Education” (FAPE) if the school is receiving federal funds to support their students
  • Prioritize rehabilitating a patient so they can participate in essential Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) at home/after school
  • May consider health insurance, Medicare/Medicaid, and/or fee for service as payment modalities
  • Follow a rehabilitation plan of care with possibly a rehab team (OT/ PT/ SLP/ ABA/ Psych/ Optometry/ etc.)

Tips and Tricks

  • Think about your life values and where a potential profession lies within those values
    • Can you set a 5 year goal from this? 10 year goal?
  • Consider your strengths and weaknesses
  • Be realistic (about salary, job location, preferences)
  • Note dates! Then work backwards
  • Tap into your network! Connections go a long way in our professional career!
    • Especially Letters of Recommendation! Think who can highlight all angles of your career
  • If you receive a denial, don’t be afraid to take the fork in the road!
