What is blogging as pedagogy?

Blogging is about purposeful and authentic writing in digital spaces with a global audience. It’s about finding new ways to improve on the quality of our conversations by collaborating and problem solving with our global audience, thinking critically about our thinking, and documenting our learning journey. It is about reciprocating with an emphasis on quality, providing students and teachers with authentic experiences to read, write, comment, reflect and connect in digital spaces, while observing digital citizenship responsibilities and rights. It is about making learning and thinking visible, searchable and available to others.

If you can crack the problem of engagement – not just “are you paying attention?”, but “are you fascinated by this?” – if you can crack engagement in deep learning then you’ve cracked 21st century schooling. Mike Berrill

It’s too late to pursue a career.

The earth goes around when it goes around a certain amount, the sun shows on the horizon.

The service economy replaced manufacturing.

Mommy has a good job with benefits.

I was high all the time...

I met your mom, had you, now I work at a muffler shop.

I stay home and take care of you.

The service economy replaced manufacturing.

I didn’t think it would matter.

There are no real jobs in America.

I didn’t pay attention in school or listen in class.

There were good jobs, we were lucky for awhile and then we weren’t so lucky anymore

The sun hasn’t come up yet.

I don’t know!

Sun comes up later.

It’s 5 o’clock in the morning...its too early.

No real jobs in America

It’s just the way it goes . . .

Instead of using SMARTNotebook to create a non-interactive lesson, type your notes, quotes, anchor chart, success criteria, etc in a blog post and then record your students’ ideas. Publish!

Visit Pinterest with your students to get inspired. Search for your Success Criteria (ie./ Elements of Design, materials, etc) and get inspired. Provide your students with a variety of art materials and let them create! Create a blog post. Take a picture. Write a reflection. Publish!

Review of Why Blog?

  • emphasis on literacy; the opportunity to write with a blog component
  • long term focus for blogs as portfolios: K-12 students will blog in all grades, across divisions, between schools and school boards; graduate with an entire record of academic career
  • focus on networked “Learning Communities”
  • focus on *6C’s
  • *Digital Literacy - (*communication, *collaboration, *creativity, *critical thinking and problem solving, cultural and social understanding and *character + e-safety + *digital citizenship/rights and responsibilities, functional skills and decision making)
