Equivalent Fractions
TEACHER NOTES
This three-part lesson includes Minds On, Action, Consolidation, Formative Assessment and Journal.
Supplement this lesson with additional practice and direct teaching to ensure students master the concepts.
Timing included on each page is a guideline to keep on track. Use it as a reminder to wrap up the lesson part to move on when appropriate.
Teaching notes and answers are included at the bottom of slides (be sure you have ‘speaker/presenter notes’ visible) and as printable PDF files. Feel free to add your own for future reference.

EXPECTATION
LEARNING GOAL
EXAMPLE
use equivalent fractions to simplify fractions, when appropriate, in various contexts
To we are learning to how to simplify fractions
Dustin and his friends are ordering pizza slices at the mall. A full pizza is cut into 12 pieces. Do you think that Dustin and his friends should ask for 9 out of 12 slices or ¾ of a pizza?
MINDS ON
Colin collects eggs from the chickens on his farm and sells them to his neighbours. He sells individually and puts them in packs of 12.
Write at least two fractions to represent the following orders
Jim would like 9 eggs. (9/12 or ¾)
Bryson would like 6 eggs
Tony would like 8 eggs
Scott would like 18 eggs
Which of the fractions is the most useful?
5 min
ACTION!
What is the easiest way to create equivalent fractions?
Anytime we want to create an equivalent fraction, we can simply multiply the numerator and denominator by 2, 3, 4 …
⅔ x 2/2 = 4/6
Write some equivalent fractions for the following:
20 min
2/5 | 7/9 | 4/7 | 3/4 |
12/8 | 11/3 | 8/5 | 3/2 |
ACTION!
We know that multiplication and division are inverse operations! Therefore, we can conclude that we can divide the numerator and denominator to create equivalent fractions.
4/6 ➗ 2/2 = ⅔
Write some equivalent fractions for the following:
20 min
4/10 | 12/16 | 7/14 | 10/25 |
12/8 | 12/8 | 15/10 | 24/16 |
EXTENSION/DISCUSSION
How do we use fractions that equal 1 to create equivalent fractions?
Do you think that we should always express fractions in lowest terms? (9/12 = ¾)
Challenge Question: How would you create an equivalent fraction for a mixed number?
3 ½ = ?
