HYPOTHESIS

  • Ho: r ≤ 0
  • Ha: r > 0 One-tailed

  • I hypothesized a positive correlation between self-esteem and intrinsic motivation. Self-esteem can be defined as a person’s self-worth or apprehension of their value as a person (Tafarodi & Ho, 2006) and intrinsic motivation is a form of motivation that comes from within, directed by self-interest and curiosity. Self esteem may raise intrinsic motivation by providing the foundation needed to persevere, such as a high self confidence and faith in one’s abilities to succeed (Baumeister & Tice, 1985; Tang et al., 1987). People with high self-esteem may need less external validation due to the confidence they find within themselves. In turn, they may find more worth in acting in their own interests.

METHODS

A long-form survey was created as a class using Qualtrics and made available only to students of a certain university using SONOS. The survey takes approximately 30-40 minutes to complete. This survey asks for the age and gender of each participant.

The survey consisted of 24 scales that will be used for each students’ research paper. These scales are either established scales or ones developed by each a student in the class. If participants failed to complete all of the questions in a given scale, they were eliminated from the study’s valid sample.

Data was analyzed using SPSS.
