Journey to Excellence (JTE)

JTE is the Boy Scouts of America’s performance recognition program. It is designed to encourage and reward success and measure the performance of individual units.

​

  • This was previously the Quality Award

​

  • It was renamed the Centennial Quality Award in 2007

​

  • The program was modified and renamed in 2011

Fundamentally, this is a self-evaluation for each individual unit: it’s an annual report card

  • Units can (and should) use this to determine:
    • What areas are working well within the unit
    • What areas could use improvement
  • Scorecards are updated each year
  • JTE should be submitted with your charter renewal
  • A unit’s score is measured annually from January through December

  • There are three different “levels” for each goal area:
    • Bronze (“could use some improvement, but on the right path”)
    • Silver (“doing well, but we still have room to improve”)
    • Gold (“we are doing awesome!”)

  • Three possible award outcomes:
    • JTE Bronze (525+ points in 7+ objectives)
    • JTE Silver (750+ points in 8+ objectives)
    • JTE Gold (1000+ points in 8+ objectives)

Earning JTE Gold is not as daunting as you might think!

  • Encourage and prioritize rank advancement
  • Record your unit’s service projects in the online tool
  • Get those scouts to summer camp!
  • Get your leaders trained
  • Have a year-round camping program / tradition
  • Connect with Packs:
    • Invite Webelos/AOL scouts to visit Troop Meetings & joint activities
  • Recruitment – do your best every season
    • Your current scouts can be an excellent source of new scouts
  • Annual Planning: budget, calendar, leadership/succession plan

  • People might ask about your JTE score before joining your unit
  • All members (youth and adult) get to wear the patch and be proud of the unit’s accomplishments
  • Ideally this effort/process is transparent to the scouts
  • JTE shouldn’t be a chore – it should be a goal-oriented way to improve our scouting program

JTE ties into multiple Scouter award requirements:

  • Scouter’s Training Award
    • Give primary leadership, to at least one of the performance objectives, each year.
    • Serve as a registered adult leader in a troop that achieves council assigned performance objectives.

​

  • Scoutmaster’s Key
    • Serve in a troop that achieves council assigned performance objectives, for at least two years.

JTE Next Steps

  • Complete the Journey to Excellence scorecard for your Troop
  • Committee Chair and Unit Leader sign scorecard
  • Unit Commissioner reviews and signs scorecard
  • Submit with Recharter to Council office by December 15th
  • Order corresponding JTE patches through Council office in early 2024
  • Celebrate your achievement with your Troop
  • Work your JTE plan for 2024
