From the Principal

Hello, Kia ora, talofa, malo e lelei, namaste, bula, kia orana, kon’nichiwa, ni hao, hej, hallo, marhabaan, kamusta, bonjour, dzien dobry, hailo, sata sri akala, as-salamu-alaykum, vanakkam, sawsdi, WELCOME TO TAMAOHO SCHOOL!

My name is Amanda Wynyard, and I am delighted to welcome you all to Tamaoho School. It is an honour to be the Foundation Principal, and have the opportunity to establish a new school. I love what I do, and each day is special. I am passionate about creating a culturally inclusive environment where learners feel happy, safe and secure and want to take risks with their learning. I fully appreciate the importance of how school shapes our learner's future. I want to ensure when our learners are ready to leave Tamaoho School, they have a love of life long learning, a sense of belonging and have the skills to navigate life so that they can be successful and contribute to our society.

Our vision is INVOLVE ME AND I LEARN. We want our learners to be fully immersed and involved in the learning process so that they are engaged and motivated to learn. We want learners to own their learning so that they know who they are as a learner, understand their goals and know what steps to take to reach them.

We want learners to develop grit so that they can learn strategies to embrace failure and learn from their mistakes.

Mrs Amanda Wynyard

ABOUT ME!

My husband is an executive of a biotech company, and we have four children together, two boys (age 13 and 7) and two girls (9, they are twins). As a parent, I want our children to be happy, confident and follow their interests so that they can be successful in their future.

Welcome to a wonderful new school, and we look forward to you joining us on our journey as we grow with our community. If you would like further information, do not hesitate to contact us or join one of our school tours.

The school name and logo

Our School Name

Tamaoho School is the name selected by the Establishment Board of Trustees in consultation with Nga Hau e Wha. To be gifted this name is an honour as Tamaoho is held in such high regard with our local Maori community.

Tamaoho is the name of a person who lived hundreds of years ago. The name Tamaoho School was decided on because of his special qualities. He became a leader in the Maori community through his good advice, direction to his people, protection of the environment, acceptance of others and his ability to use his knowledge to be a great problem solver.

He lived using some ‘touchstones’ that are still really important in our lives today, such as being honest and speaking the truth (Pono), doing the right thing (Tika) and showing kindness and helping others (Aroha). By living this way he had a lot of followers who admired him and wanted to live by his example.

The schools learning principles and values have been designed by remembering Tamaoho’s special leadership qualities.

Our School Logo

In traditional Māori Pā (village), Te Pātaka were used for the storage of kai (food). However, the Rangatira (Chief) would have special Te Pātaka made to store taonga (treasures). Stories shared tell of how Tamaoho, used Te Pātaka, to store taonga he wanted his people to value and learn about. Tamaoho School is our Te Pātaka because we believe knowledge and learning are our taonga.

The Purpose of Assessment for Learning

  • To build learner focused relationships
  • drive teaching and learning
  • plan for deliberate acts of teaching
  • inform student progress and plans for next steps (learning goals)

Assessment Where Teachers:

  • use a wide variety of assessment tools to evaluate and measure learners progress against the National Curriculum
  • use assessments to notice patterns, misunderstandings, plan nexts steps and adjust their planning accordingly
  • share with learners personalised feedback to help them set goals and explore misunderstandings (through our learning pathways)
  • support learners to notice how they are going with their learning: Where they are at, where to next, and whether they know how to get there

Reporting to Whanau:

We value the relationships between whanau and school and have an open-door policy for all.

Hero is an online platform for teachers to share a range of assessments for each learner, track their progress over time and celebrate achievement in ‘REAL TIME’. Whanau will be able to access their child’s learning across the Curriculum, including their key skills learning at any time.

You will need to download the ‘Hero app’, and you will be provided with learning updates through photographs and videos from your child and your child’s teacher.

This type of reporting is ongoing. You will also be invited into the learning spaces each term to celebrate your child’s learning as well as taking part in learner-led Conferences twice a year with a focus on your child’s progress in learning.

Home learning

We want our learners to be experiencing the world around them and be active outside of school. Talking and providing experiences for your children is the best homework you can provide.

Our learners will get:

  • A reading book each school day
  • A list of spellings each week (tested once or twice a term)
  • Experience or project each term
  • Number facts

Enviroschool

Enviroschool is a whole school approach focusing on learning for sustainability that honours cultural tradition, perspectives and the diversity of all people and culture. Your child is welcome to travel to and from school via bicycle or scooter. We have a bike rack that can manage up to 50 bikes. Please provide and ensure your child wears a safety helmet on their scooter or bike. We do not recommend children riding to school by themselves unless they are older than 10 (recommendation of the NZ Police).

Walking Bus

Walking School Buses reduce the number of cars on the road, making our environment safer and cleaner and supporting our school vision of becoming an environmentally sustainable school. Children will walk to and from school along a designated route, under the supervision of adult volunteers (often parents).
