The future of work

Data driven – hence ‘freemium’ model of business

65% of children entering primary school today likely to end up working in completely new job types that don’t yet exist

Jobs not automated will significantly change

Knowledge economy - marginal cost of production approaching zero

Capitalism as we know it is coming to an end?

Wikipedia, OpenSouce, Firefox, Blockchain

Threat or Opportunity?

40% of all jobs expected to be automated by 2030 – hollowing out of the middle class

Precariat – zero hours contracts, gig economy

Competition from workers in other countries working over the internet and willing to accept lower wages

Economists Brynjolfsson and McAfee - could yield greater inequality, particularly in its potential to disrupt labour markets

History shows jobs not destroyed but replaced

Threat or Opportunity?

With great change comes great opportunity.

Problems will arise that need you to solve them.

The problem isn’t robots taking jobs, but people doing the jobs of robots

Threat or Opportunity?

On consumer side raise global income levels and improve the quality of life for populations around the world.

On the supply side a system based on scarcity is now faced with abundance. Hence creation of monopolies (google for example) and unjust limits on usage (Jstor for example – Aaron Swartz)

In the future will talent, more than capital, represent the critical factor of production?

UI – User Interface Design The way through which a user interacts with a machine, an application or a website. This can include hardware (display screens, keyboards etc) but more commonly refers to the appearance of a desktop/app/website etc.

SEO – Search Engine Optimisation. Activities that attempt to boost search engine ranking (e.g. top page on Google). Largely free things (keywords etc), differs from SEM which is paid activities like adverts

UX – User Experience Design  is the process of enhancing customer satisfaction and loyalty by improving the usability, ease of use, and pleasure provided in the interaction between the customer and the product

AI – Artificial intelligence. The simulation of human intelligence processes by machines

Big data – extremely large data sets that may be analysed computationally to reveal patterns, trends, and associations.

IOT – Internet of Things. Connecting all devices and ‘things’ to the internet and/or to each other to allow novel interactions, improve ease of use and/or increased data capture

Blockchain - A decentralised, digital database – publicly accessible but anonymised.
