Mom and Dad gave Iris a kite. It was a fine kite. It had five red lines on it. Mom, Dad, and Iris went in the big side yard. Dad had a kite kit. It had string for the kite. Mom added a wide strip of ribbon with white and red stripes.
Dad and Iris ran with the kite, and it started to go up. “I am like a kite pilot,” said Iris as she held the line. “And a fine pilot you are,” said Dad. Just then, Iris saw a spider on the kite’s line! Yikes! Iris did not like spiders! She let the string slip. Just then, a big gust of wind hit the kite. In no time, the kite vanished.
“We will find the kite,” Dad said. “Let’s take a ride in the car.” Iris and Dad started to drive. They went a mile but did not find the kite. “I bet that kite went all the way to China,” said Iris.
When Iris and Dad got back, Mom had a wide smile. She held the kite! “A kind man in a fire truck got it out of a big pine,” said Mom. Dad got out the kite kit and fixed the string. In no time, the string started to unwind, and the kite was back up in the wind. “Look out for spiders,” said Dad. Iris did not mind Dad’s wisecrack. “I will!” smiled Iris. “I will!”

When Hope woke up, she spotted a note from her big sister, Opal. It said:
Hope,
When I get home, I will have a surprise for you.
Opal
A surprise! What could it be? Would Opal bring a bunch of roses home for Hope? Or would Opal give Hope a ring with a big, red stone?
At five, Opal came home. She had a big box and some bags. “Hello, Hope!” said Opal. “Hi, Opal,” said Hope. “I got your note!” Opal handed Hope the big box. “Hold this for a moment, Hope,” she said. Hope looked at the box. “Opal!” said Hope. “Is this my surprise?” “No, no,” said Opal. “The box you are holding has thick robes for both Gramps and Nana. Those robes will help them when it gets cold.”
Then Opal started to open the bags. “Is my surprise in one of those?” said Hope. “Nope,” said Opal. “This bag has a globe for Dad’s den. And this bag has things to fix the broken stove.” Hope held both bags in a sad pose.
“Opal, was your note just a joke?” she asked. “No,” smiled Opal. “Go poke your head in the kitchen.” Hope did. There she spotted one more box. And she saw a cold little nose sticking out of it! Hope opened the top. Inside was a kitten! That was Opal’s surprise for Hope! Hope jumped up and just about choked Opal with a big hug. “This is the best surprise ever!” she told Opal.

Nick was a pupil in Miss Cube’s music class. Miss Cube gave bugle lessons. In several days, the music pupils would perform for moms and dads. Lots of bugle pupils will perform. That meant lots of moms and dads would be there! Nick did not think he could perform well before them.
Miss Cube could tell how Nick felt. “Don’t think about moms and dads, Nick. When you just think about the music, it goes well,” said Miss Cube. But Nick still felt upset. It was hard for him to perform his bugle music in class.
Miss Cube used humor to help Nick stop thinking about those moms and dads. Humor did help a bit. But Nick still could not forget about performing his music for moms and dads.
Nick started to hope that zero pupils would have to perform. He started to hope that things would stop them. “What if moms and dads buy zero tickets? Or what if a fuse goes out? Could a pupil paste my music upside-down?” Nick whispered to himself.
At last, the big day came. The moms and dads did buy tickets. A fuse did not go out. His music was not pasted upside-down. Nick had to perform. Nick held up his bugle and started. He did not think about moms and dads. He did think about his music.
As Nick performed, lots of moms and dads started tapping. When Nick finished performing, lots of moms and dads started clapping. Now Nick was not upset. Nick felt glad!

Kids like backyards! In backyards, kids swing and slide. Kids run and hide. When it’s hot, kids run under cold water from sprinklers. But a backyard is not just for humans. It is home to many critters such as moles, bugs, rabbits, snakes, and birds. A gate cannot lock these things out.
Ants are common in most yards. Ants may not be cute, but they are strong. For their size, ants are stronger than humans. Some ants are the strongest critters in any backyard. Ants can lift big things. Well, these things are big to ants!
Yards that are close to ponds or lakes can have garter snakes. Garter snakes have long stripes. Like you, as a garter snake gets older, it gets bigger. Garter snakes cannot hurt most humans. But do not pick them up. Do garter snakes help humans? Yes, they snack on insects that harm gardens.
A skunk can be another critter in a backyard. Skunks can hide in yards, under porches, or next to sheds. Skunks hide well. They can be closer to us than many of us think! Skunks dig for grubs in grass. That makes holes in the grass.
Are garden spiders making big webs in your backyard? If not, they are in another yard not far away. Garden spiders dine on insects trapped in those webs. Many of these insects are garden pests. Garden spiders help humans. Female garden spiders are bigger than males. In fact, female garden spiders can be the biggest spiders in your yard. Garden spiders bite if you make them mad. So do not make them mad!

April came home from class sad. She got her math test back. Her test grade was not as good as she had expected.
“Hello, April,” smiled Mom. April was silent at first, a sign that she was sad. “Hi, Mom,” April whispered after a moment. “This is my math test. I got all these problems wrong, and my grade is wrecked.” “There will be many more tests,” Mom told April. “You are a good pupil. You will do better next time. You can write out the problems you missed, and I can assign you more problems. You can write problems, too.”
The next morning, Mom woke April at nine. “Wake up!” said Mom. “We are going to Wren Park. It is next to Uncle Dale’s home. It has many rides!” April jumped into the car with Mom. In no time, they spotted the sign for Wren Park.
“Let’s take a ride on that big slide,” said April. Mom and April got in line and rode the slide. Next Mom chose a ride that was like a spinning plane. Then they rode fake mules that bucked up and down. The park had games and music as well. It was well-designed.
“It was kind of you to take me to Wren Park, Mom,” said April. “I forgot about the bad grade.” “There will be another test for the next unit,” said Mom. “You have a knack for getting smarter.” “Thanks, Mom!” smiled April. “Let’s take another ride down the slide and wave to Uncle Dale!” “And this time, let’s go faster,” proposed Mom. “I will go the fastest!” April yelled.

Steve and Eva were twins. One morning, they saw a big, big box on the rug. It had holes in the sides. “What is in this box?” Eva said. “I will lift up its lid and look,” Steve said.
Steve set his hand on the box lid. When he did, the box yelled, “Do not open me!” That made the twins jump! Steve said, “Yikes!” Eva said, “A box does not yell!” “This box does,” said the box.
The twins grinned. They could tell that it was Beth in the box. She was the twins’ little sister. “What is in this box, Steve?” said Eva with a wink. “It is a secret,” yelled Beth from in the box. “But here is a hint. It has stripes.”
“A secret with stripes,” said Steve. “That is a good hint.” “Is it a zebra?” said Eva. “It is not a zebra,” said Beth in the box. “A zebra has black and white stripes. This secret’s stripes are not black and white.” “Is it a tiger?” said Steve. “Nope,” said Beth in the box. “A tiger does not have red and white stripes like me.”
Eva gave Steve a second wink. “This secret has red and white stripes, Steve,” said Eva. “I wish Beth could see it. She likes red and white stripes.” Then Beth sprang out of the box. Dad and Mom often take long bike rides. At times, Dad will go with his pals. At other times, Mom will go with her pals. Both Mom and Dad go when Gramps can sit with me at home.
I often asked Dad and Mom if I could go on long rides with them. “Yes, Rose,” Dad told me. But then Mom added that I must ride my bike around the block a lot. I must get stronger for a long bike ride.
So I did ride around the block. Our block has a little hill. I rode up and down that hill many times. I rode so fast that I could taste the wind! Dad saw how much I rode. “Rose is a strong rider. Let’s take her on a long ride. She can do it.” Dad told Mom. “I hope so, but the ride is hard,” Mom said.
So one morning, Dad, Mom, and I started a long bike ride. We rode in bike lanes to Green Lake Park. That park has big hills. We rode up and down. Up was hard, but down was fast and fun! The last hill was harder than the other hills. It was the hardest for me!
When we made it to the top, Dad said, “Let’s take a quick drink.” That drink tasted good! From the top, we could see a man on a horse at Green Lake.
Later at home, I felt tired, but not too tired. Dad patted me on the back. “I think Rose is our cutest biking pal!” he said. Mom hugged me. “Yes, and our best!” she said.

Pete and Sam went on a three-day camping trip. They each had to bring things. Sam had to bring things to eat, such as meat, green beans, cheese, pea pods, and beets. Pete had to bring stuff to keep things clean.
Pete and Sam set up camp under a big tree. It was the ideal spot. They would make plans for their hike east on the next day. But first, they would make a big meal for this evening. Sam grilled the meat and green beans. Pete mixed the pea pods and beets with cheese. With their meal, they each had a big cup of peach tea. Then it was time to sleep. Sam said, “I hope this feast will not mean bad dreams.”
In the morning, Pete and Sam hiked east. They hiked up a steep, steep hill. It was Pete’s job to read the map. As Pete did, his feet slid on damp leaves. He fell! When he did, Pete let go of his map! Sam saw the wind sweep the map far away! “Please tell me we have a second map!” said Sam. Pete had a seat on the log. “We do not,” he said.
Then a storm came! Pete and Sam were wet. They did not have a map. They did not know how to find the path out of the trees. Sam started to scream, “Help! Help!”
“Sam! Wake up!” yelled Pete. “You are dreaming!” Sam woke up. He was not on a hike! He was in the tent. The hike was a dream! “That feast did mean bad dreams!” Sam said.

Do you know how big the lakes next to Wisconsin are? I do. I know those lakes well. My name is Eve. I am a diver. I dive in those Midwest lakes.
The lake north of Wisconsin is very big! It has big waves that can knock ships all around. Those big waves can even sink ships! My job as a diver is to explore under those waves. At times, I even look for old shipwrecks hidden in that lake.
I go with seven divers. Together, we take a little ship far out in the lake. We use computers to look under the lake. When we think we spot a wreck, we dive down to check it out.
There can be risks in diving. If things go wrong, you cannot call for help! So when I dive, I go with a partner. Under the waves, partners swim together. I help my partner. He or she helps me!
When I dive, I have a timer on my wrist. My partner and I must not be under the waves too long.
It is fun swimming around an old wreck. I find things humans used long ago. I take some things back up to the ship. I bring up old cabinet knobs, old knives and forks, and even old brushes. One time, I pulled an old box up to the ship. The box was not wet inside. In it were old documents. The box had saved the papers!
The big lakes of the Midwest can be filled with lots of surprises. I like exploring them!

It was a hot April day at Lake Haines. It was a good day for Dad and Jane to paint the porch. But Dad needed paint. He had to get it at Clay’s Paint Shop in Snail Bay. Snail Bay was miles away on the east side of the lake. But Dad had a sailing ship.
So Jane and Dad sailed on Lake Haines. They sailed east to get paint at Snail Bay.
At first, the day stayed perfect. Jane sat on the ship’s deck looking at the trails next to Lake Haines. Jane liked to play games with her pals on those trails.
As Dad and Jane sailed, the sun went away. The day became gray! A storm was on its way. It started to rain hard! Strong winds made big waves! The ship began to sway. Jane felt afraid.
“Grab that rail, Jane!” yelled Dad. “Wrap that braided rope around your waist.” Dad wanted Jane to remain safe as the ship swayed. While Jane held the rail, Dad used a red pail to bail rain from the ship. But the rain came fast. Jane spotted a green pail chained to the rail. She used it to help Dad bail.
At last, the rain went away. Rays from the sun came back. “That rain was a pain!” said Dad.
Jane waited as Dad checked the main sail and every detail of the ship. It had to be safe before they kept sailing to Clay’s Paint Shop in Snail Bay. “Let’s get on our way,” said Dad. “What do you say?” “I say next time we take a train,” said Jane. Dad smiled.

It was an early, sunny morning. Missy walked in a field. She was a writer. She liked to walk and plan her next make-believe story.
But Missy had two problems. First, she could not think of a good story to write. Second, she forgot her sunglasses. She needed to shield herself from the sun. “Next time, do not forget to carry your sunglasses,” Missy told herself.
She felt a bit silly as she heard herself speak. Yet at times, speaking to herself helped her get story ideas.
Just then, Missy heard heavy steps. She turned, but she could not quite see. She held up her hand to shield the sun. Wait! Was she looking at a floppy-headed donkey? “Why are you in this field?” Missy asked the floppy-headed donkey. The donkey trotted away. “Did I really see that?” asked Missy as she squinted into the sun.
Moments later, Missy heard scratching. She turned around. She turned to the sun a second time. Wait! Was she looking at a sleepy-headed turkey? “Why are you in this field?” Missy asked the sleepy turkey. The turkey left. “Did I really see that?” asked the squinting Missy.
Then Missy heard funny chattering. She turned and squinted in the sun a third time. Wait! Was she looking at smiley chimpanzees? “Why are you in this field?” Missy asked the smiley chimpanzees. “Chimpanzees do not live here!” In an instant, the smiley chimpanzees left. “Did I really see them?” asked Missy.

Mom was at the store. Dad woke up late. “Yikes, it is Thursday!” he said. “That means there is only one day to clean up before Gramps is here!”
Gramps was going to live with Dad, Mom, and the kids on their farm. Dad wanted the farm to be neat and clean for Gramps. Dad got the kids out of bed. “No more time to sleep,” said Dad. “Gramps will be here! First, we need to put clean sheets on each bed!”
Then Dad gave different jobs to the three kids. “Nate, dust the green seats in the den. Gail, take the gray kitchen screens into the yard, and spray them with the hose. Jean, sweep the dirt from the stone path to the street.” The three kids did those things.
“Nate, next put those grain pails away in the barn,” said Dad. “Gail, please take this box of nails there too. Jean, please sweep the porch until it is neat and clean. A lot of grain and seed is on the porch. It is a real mess.”
“May I repeat that back, Dad? I need to know that my brain got it right,” said Gail. Dad smiled. Gail was sweet. She repeated Dad’s plan.
The kids’ jobs were finished. The farm was neat and clean. Dad and the kids relaxed. When Mom came back, she said, “Good job, but I think you forgot a detail. All six Smith kids did chores. Mom had a way to tell people which chore to do. Next to the phone, she had a chore chart. On it, Mom would write the name of a chore. Next to the name, she put a photo of a kid.
This morning, David saw his photo next to the chore Dust. That means he had to dust before he ran out. Some people hate dusting, but David did not mind it. The dust would build up on many shelves. He climbed up to dust in corners. He got down to dust under tables. He flicked dust from under the beds. He listened to music from his headphones while he cleaned.
When David completed the dusting, Mom held her thumb up and said, “Good job!” David grabbed his field hockey sticks. He was going to the park. “Listen, you need to be back by five,” said Mom.
As David left, he saw Mom write Knit on the chore chart. “Knit?” said David to himself. “Who besides Stephanie knows how to knit?”
At five, David came home. Now he saw a photo next to Knit. It was a photo of Stephanie, his big sister. In the photo, she had on her uniform. She was Major Stephanie Smith, a brave helicopter pilot. Stephanie had been on islands far from home. David had seen her last in the summer, and he missed her very much.

The play was about a general in charge of a large army. Ginger had the role of the general. It was the biggest part in the play.
Ginger’s teacher, Miss Sage, went onstage to tell the moms and dads about the play. “Ladies and gentlemen,” said Miss Sage. “Thank you for being here. We have a great play about the first lady to become an army general. Now, let the play begin!”
The time came for Ginger to go onstage. She was a bit afraid about performing while all the moms and dads were looking. She walked gently onto the stage. She spotted her mom and dad in their seats.

Mom could tell that Mike felt frightened. She told him there was not a thing to be frightened about. “I know,” said Mike. “But I wish I had a little light at night.”
Mom remembered when she was a child. She too had felt a bit frightened on really dark nights. Mom wanted to help Mike. So Mom gave him a little nightlight. Mom turned it on at night. The light was not too bright. “That light will work just right,” said Mike. And it did. Mike slept well.
That summer Mike’s family visited the big city. Mike was surprised at how bright the city was. Lights were shining all the time. Lights were on from sunset to sunrise!

There is a park by our home. It has a pond. In the winter, the pond freezes. We can ice-skate. My sisters and I like ice-skating. We skate and skate under the cold winter sky. We like to skate.
We three sisters are not girls who just spin and twirl on ice. We do a bit of that. But we play hockey too. And we race fast on ice skates. When just the three of us race, my sisters like to tie. They do not like to win. They are nice.

Gene and his sister Cindy woke up early at the family cabin. Mom, Dad, Gramps, and Granny still slept. So did Uncle Ralph and his kids. “Let’s head to Mr. Shield’s General Store,” Cindy said quietly. “We can get our own groceries and fix breakfast for the family.”
“That will be easy,” said Gene. “The general store is just past Mr. Shield’s fence.” The kids had helped Mr. Shield mend a piece of his fence yesterday.
Gene and Cindy woke Dad to tell him their plan. At the general store, the kids went up and down the lanes. They filled a large cart with lots of groceries.
“Hi, kids,” said Mr. Shield. “Your cart is really filled! You must be done shopping.” Gene and Cindy glanced at their cart. It had cereal, gingerbread, a huge piece of ham, turkey bacon, a carton of eggs, a giant box of muffins, peaches, spicy breakfast cider, iced tea, milk, and a heavy bag of rice.
“Mr. Shield, what is the price for these groceries?” asked Gene. “I have three bucks.” “I have ninety-five cents,” added Cindy. Mr. Shield looked at the groceries. “Well, to be honest, the real price is a lot, but I own this store. Because you kids helped me mend the fence around my field, here is an easy deal,” said Mr. Shield. “You can have these groceries for three bucks and ninety-five cents. But I must have breakfast with your family!” “It’s a deal!” yelled Gene and Cindy.

Our class is taking a trip to an apple farm. Before we go, Mrs. Coats tells us how apples grow. She shows us a photo of an apple grove.
The yellow bus drives to the farm.“It’s a fine day for picking apples!” exclaims our bus driver, Mr. Clover. “This farm grows many kinds of apples,” shares Mrs. Coats. “You may pick Jonathan, Granny Smith, or Rome apples.”
Farmer Jones shows us the right way to pick apples. Then he gives us a box and a picking pole. Joan and I carry the box. Tony grabs the picking pole.
We stroll to the apple grove. We see row after row of trees. The trees have so many apples, and they glow in the sunshine! As we roam between the rows, Mrs. Coats shows us Rome trees. “You can pick from these trees.” “Joan, will you hold the box? Tony, may I try the picking pole?” I ask. I roll up my sleeves and grab the pole.
The pole is long and not very light. “Can I help you lift it?” offers Joan. “Thanks, but I can cope on my own,” I reply. I lift the pole as high as I can. Then, with a twist, I pick the apple off the tree. Plop! It drops right into the box.
Joan and Tony take turns with the pole. Before we know it, our box is loaded with apples. We carry them back to the barn. Mrs. Coats asks us to divide the apples into three piles. We divide them into Jonathan, Granny Smith, and Rome.
“I wish I could make cider!” cries Joan. “I hope I can make a pie,” adds Tony. Me? I just want to snack on a crunchy apple! “Let’s each pick an apple to try,” suggests Mrs. Coats. “But, we must clean them first,” she adds. I pick an apple from the Rome pile and clean it. Then I take a big bite. Mmmm—what a yummy snack!

Matthew liked to play with his helicopter. “Want to play with me, Pam?” he asked. “No, it’s way too hot in the sun,” she said. Pam twisted the ice tray for more ice cubes.
“Let’s go to a museum,” said Uncle Hugo. “I don’t want to go!” cried Matthew. “Museums are boring!” “A few museums are amusing,” argued Pam. “Museums can have lots of fun things,” added Uncle Hugo. “Things like helicopters, planes—” “Planes? Really? Can we go, Uncle Hugo?” asked Matthew. “But museums are boring, right?” teased Uncle Hugo. “Well, maybe I’ll change my mind,” said Matthew.
Uncle Hugo, Pam, and Matthew drove eight miles to the museum. “It’s so huge!” cried Pam. “Yes, but it better have amusing things!” cried Matthew. “What luck! The museum has a display about things that fly,” said Uncle Hugo. “I will see planes!” cried Matthew.
“Is that music I hear?” asked Pam. “Yes,” Uncle Hugo nodded. “It’s the music of birds! Follow me.” “Look at these birds!” said Pam. “Some are huge!” “And some are sort of puny!” said Matthew.
“I like the cute yellow birds,” said Pam. “Me, too,” said Matthew. “But I like this one best.” All the birds were flying and singing. “That red bird is singing hip-hop music!” joked Uncle Hugo. “You’re the real amusement here, Uncle Hugo,” groaned Pam.
“Look at those planes! They’re all flying!” gasped Matthew. “They’re not really flying,” said Uncle Hugo. “They’re hanging from wires.” “That old one over there is huge!” cried Matthew. “Think of all the fuel it used!” added Pam.
They located a few empty seats in a row and waited for a show to begin. “This place is packed!” said Pam. “I hope we get to see some huge planes,” said Matthew. In a few seconds, the lights dimmed. Stars lit up the entire sky. The stars continued to glow brightly.
“So, what did my niece and nephew think of the museum?” asked Uncle Hugo. “I liked the music best,” said Pam. “I learned that museums are amusing,” said Matthew.

The band waited to march in the parade. The band members’ uniforms looked perfect. The uniform hats and coats were yellow. The hats had feathers that were a dark gray. They had a smoky hue. The pants were white with a yellow stripe.
David played a cute little bugle. Then he looked at himself in a shiny store window. He looked perfect in his uniform, but David had a secret. He did not feel so perfect. In this humid summer weather, his uniform felt quite hot. He felt rivers of sweat going down his body.
David looked at his fellow band members. Were they hot too? Just then, the drum major said, “It’s time, band! Let’s line up.”
The drum major was the band’s marching leader. He would march and strut ahead of the band. He had a huge feather on his uniform hat. He chose the music that the band would play. The band members looked to the drum major to cue the music.
“Do not start until I signal go,” said the drum major. Then he looked at David and his fellow band members. “I know it is hot in these uniforms today. But when the music starts, we will forget about the heat. We will make people happy as we march. Then they will forget about the heat too. We will feel good about that.” David hoped what the drum major told them was right.
Then the drum major gave the signal. The band began to march. In a few moments, David held his bugle up and began to play. Music filled the street. People began to clap. David looked ahead, but he still saw the adults and children on the sides of the road. They had happy faces!
As David marched, he forgot about the humid summer heat. The drum major was quite right. David did feel good about helping people feel happy today. But David could tell you one more thing. He would feel even better when he got out of his hot uniform!

It was quite a day for Scooter the cat. He got loose in the yard and chased a goose around the pool. But the goose got away. Scooter was quick, but geese can fly. Even a fool knows that cats cannot fly. The goose landed on the roof. “It is too bad I cannot fly,” said Scooter to himself. “That would be so cool!”
Scooter the cat felt in the mood to play. That is when he spotted two boots by the porch. He liked to sneak up on boots. He hid behind a bamboo plant before jumping out and landing on a boot. He bit the lace of the boot. But his tooth got stuck. Scooter yanked and tugged, but he could not get the bootlace from his tooth.
Just then, the same goose that Scooter had chased around the pool came down from the roof and landed on the porch. “I see you have a boot stuck to your tooth,” said the goose with a giggle.
Scooter was not in the mood to be teased by a goose. He could tell his own drool had begun to ooze down the lace of the boot. He felt a bit foolish.
“Let me help you get loose,” said the goose. He got close to Scooter, put the lace in his beak, and gave a pull. Scooter was loose from the boot! “Thanks,” said Scooter. “Glad to help,” said the goose. “In return, do you mind if I take a swim in the pool?” Scooter said that he did not mind. “It will be noon soon anyway,” said Scooter. “I need some food.”
Scooter went to his dish. It was filled with scoops of tasty food. He ate his food and licked the smooth dish clean. Scooter then groomed his fur, and then he looked at the goose relaxing in the pool. It made Scooter sleepy. His lids began to droop. “Have fun in the pool,” Scooter told the goose. “I am going to my room for a snooze.” Yes, it was quite a day for Scooter.

Some time ago, Rudy the Robin had plain feathers. It was Sue the Fox who gave the robin new red plumes. Many people do not know the true story. Here is how it happened.
It was June, and the animals were playful. Bruce the Raccoon was the most playful. He was rude and liked to tease Sue. Bruce was never sorry when he tricked Sue.
Sue was playing a tune on her flute. Bruce challenged Sue to a race. Bruce knew that Sue could run faster, so he started first.
The race was just something to get Sue to the river. Bruce ran up a dune on the river’s bank. He peered into the water. Soon, Sue came to the water. She saw Bruce’s face in the blue water. Thinking Bruce was in the river, Sue jumped in. She swam, trying to get to Bruce. She had no clue he was playing a trick.
At last, Sue dragged herself to the bank and fell asleep. Then Bruce played his rudest trick. He gently packed thick mud on Sue’s face.
When Sue woke up, she could not see! The mud was glued to her face. Sue yelled for help, but the animals were afraid of foxes. Rudy the Robin was afraid too, but he felt sorry for Sue. “I am just a plain bird,” Rudy said as he flew to Sue. “I will help you if you will not hurt me.”
Rudy pecked and chewed the mud from her face. Sue was truly grateful. “Kind robin, you helped me. Now it is my duty to help you!” Sue said.
Sue knew a place where the tulips grew and the water ran red. Sue led Rudy to the spot. Sue picked a tulip and dipped it in the water. Sue used the tulip to paint Rudy’s chest feathers red. “These new red plumes will stand out,” she said, “and I will know not to harm you.”
To this day, all robins have a red chest. When you see those bright red plumes, remember something about being brave and kind.

Ever since she was a little girl, Ruby had wanted to be in a band. She started banjo lessons when she was five. Now Ruby was ready to start her own band. Her pal, Joan, played the flute. And Joan’s pal, Matthew, played the tuba.
“Hello, Matthew,” Ruby said on the phone. “It is time to start our band. Tell Joan!” “Do we have a name for this band yet?” asked Matthew. “Not yet,” replied Ruby. “How about this name?” said Matthew. “Matthew and the Cute Girls.” Ruby felt that this was a truly horrible name, but she did not want to hurt Matthew’s feelings. “I think we could make a rule. We will not include kids’ names in the band name,” said Ruby. “But we can discuss that later.”
Ruby ran to find Mom in the garden. She was pruning shrubs. “Mom, is it okay if my music pals come over?” asked Ruby. “That is fine,” said Mom smiling. “Just remember your duty as a host. Rule one is to keep this place clean. Rule two is to keep it even cleaner! These rules have value.”
Then Ruby told Mom, “We are going to start our band.” “Does this band have a name?” Mom asked. “Not yet,” said Ruby. “Maybe you could name it something cool, like Music Volts or Rescue Notes.” “Those are interesting, Mom. In truth, I will have to share these with everyone,” said Ruby.
Matthew and Joan arrived. “I have a great name for us,” said Joan. “Coastal Tune Troopers.” Ruby did not like this name at all. And she did not want to argue. The truth was that she wanted to name the band The Ruby Slippers. But because she had made the rule about not including first names, she was out of luck.
Just then, Mom called. “Lunch is ready! I made tuna fish. And I have bowls and spoons for yogurt.” That gave Ruby an idea. “I’ve got it!” yelled Ruby. “Let’s call the band Tune-a-Fish!” Everyone felt that was a great band name. Now they could play some new tunes!

It was a warm summer night. Brooke was in bed reading a good book. She started to doze, so she flipped off the light.
Now Brooke could not sleep! She could not believe that three fire trucks were parked under her room. She could not believe she was a firefighter!
Suddenly, a bell started to ring and ring. It was the fire alarm! There must be a fire out in the city! Brooke did not have time to think. She slid from her bed right into her boots. They sat at the foot of her bed. Brooke stood up. She rushed to the fire pole and slid down it.
This was Brooke’s first real time fighting a fire. She was a rookie firefighter. She felt a little afraid. Would she do well? But she knew this was not the time to ask herself that. It was the time to act. Brooke grabbed her coat from the hook and ran to the truck. “Go fast, Brooke,” yelled one of the firefighters. “Hoof it!” That meant she should run faster. Brooke did.
She jumped on the truck, and it zoomed off. The truck raced to a burning home. Brooke could smell wood burning. She jumped from the truck and looked at the home as it burned. “Grab that hose, Brooke,” a man yelled to her. Brooke took the heavy hose and ran to the burning wooden home. She could feel the fire’s heat. She flipped down her safety hood. Suddenly rushing water shook the hose, but Brooke held on.
It was not a big fire. That was good! The firefighters put it out quickly. The home had been empty, so no one was hurt.
When the fire truck got back, Brooke had to wash soot from her face. She was tired and glad that her first firefighting job was finished. An older firefighter came over to Brooke. He shook her hand. “Good job tonight, Brooke!” he said. “Thanks!” Brooke smiled. Brooke felt good about her job. She was glad to be a firefighter!

The entire town was at the big game. The star of the home team was Max Brown. Max hit home runs for the Council Town Scouts. Max Brown stood in the outfield. The sound of the crowd yelling for him was so loud that Max took a bow.
Back in the dugout sat little Sammy Powder. He was on the Scouts too, but he was never allowed to play. That did not matter to Sammy. He was just proud to be a Scout! He sat, yelled for his team, and handed out towels.
Right now it was the bottom of the last inning. The Scouts were down by one run. The first batter for the Scouts hit one on the ground. He was out. But the next Scout got a good hit. Now Max Brown was up to bat! A home run would win this game!
Max rubbed the round tip of his bat for good luck and stepped up to the plate. Max allowed the first pitch to whiz by him. Strike one! Max allowed the next pitch to whiz by him too. Strike two!
The crowd did not frown, however. They knew they could count on Max Brown. The next pitch came. Max took a great big swing! But Max missed! Max Brown had struck out!
There were two outs. As the next batter came to the plate, he tripped and fell down. “Ouch!” cried the player. He had hurt his foot, so he had to be taken out of the game. Sammy Powder was the only player left. He had to hit. The crowd began to pout.
“Sammy has no power!” Sammy heard a man shout. But Sammy just found a bat and bounced up to the plate. He looked at the pitcher on the mound. The pitcher wound up and threw. Sammy pounced on the first pitch.
POW! Sammy hit a towering home run! He felt like he was floating on a cloud as he ran around the bases. The happy sound of the crowd was loud, loud, loud! The Council Town Scouts were crowned the champs, thanks to little Sammy Powder.

This week’s episode is beyond the globe. That’s right! Our search for interesting animals will take us to outer space! Can you picture how animals in outer space adapt to their surroundings? “Our first stop in outer space is to a place named Dot. Let’s see how many animals we can spot on Dot! Howard, look around. Tell us what you see.” “Brooke, this is a dotted wool cow. I had seen them in pictures and books, but this is the first one I’ve seen in the wild. Is the microphone picking up that loud growl? That sound is what allowed me to find it. See how well it blends?”
“Here we are at a place named Round. Wow! All I see are round things! I don’t see many animals around, however. What about you, Howard?” “Well, Brooke, you must look closely. You see, most of the animals here are round! Look, I see a round sow. See her big round snout?”
“Now we are visiting another far-out place. Here on Stripe, the animals have stripes, as you might think by now.” “That’s right, Brooke. Take a look in this stream. It’s full of striped trout.”
“Now here is a place that I’ve been hoping to visit. This is Three. Let me tell you kids, there are triangles in every nook!” “Yes there are, Brooke. Look closely at the mounds of sand behind us. Those mounds are full of space hounds. They are sleeping now, but when the sun rises, look out!”
“Here we are at our last stop, a place named Brown. We’re deep in the Brown Woods. It’s full of brown trees and brown flowers. Howard, what animals are in the Brown Woods?” “Well, it looks like a brown owl is hooked on that tree over there.”

Long ago, a bootmaker and his daughter lived in a small city. The bootmaker was called Walt. His daughter was Audrey. Walt also had a pet mouse named Oliver.
One day at dawn, Walt took all his boots to the city in his cart. Walt brought Oliver too. Walt passed the stall of a rich merchant. “Halt!” cried the merchant. “How much for all that you have?” “Ten gold pieces,” Walt said. The merchant paid Walt ten gold pieces. Then the merchant got into the cart and told Walt to get out. “Why should I get out of my cart?” asked Walt. “You agreed to sell all,” said the tricky merchant. “That includes the cart and horse. I bought it all. It’s mine. Go talk to the judge!”
Walt sought the judge and told his story. “You ought to be clearer,” said the judge. “I cannot help you.” Walt walked slowly home and told Audrey all about it. He even lost his pet mouse! “Don’t cry,” said Audrey. “I have a thought. Make more boots!”
A week later, Audrey, hauled the new boots to town in a small wheelbarrow. The rich merchant saw Audrey and ran from his stall. “How much for all you have?” he asked. “How much will you offer?” Audrey countered. The merchant paused; then he began to draw three gold pieces from his pocket. “You offer all that’s in your hand?” Audrey asked. “Yes,” agreed the merchant. The merchant gave Audrey the gold. “And your three gold rings,” Audrey said. “What?” bawled the merchant. “You offered me all that was in your hand,” said Audrey. “Take off those rings, or I’ll call the judge!” “Let the judge rule!” said the merchant.
“You ought to be clearer,” said the judge. “Give her those rings.” The merchant was caught in his own trap. He handed Audrey the rings. She kept two and held up the smallest. “Will you trade this for Walt’s things?” Audrey asked. “You’re Walt’s daughter!” gasped the merchant. They traded and Audrey went home.

In the east, there is a deep, salty sea. All kinds of fish live there, including koi. Mighty dragons live in the deepest part. They have amazing powers. For example, they can cause waves with the swish of their tails.
All koi know of the Dragon Gate. It is the entrance to the dragons’ home. If a koi enters the Dragon Gate, it will turn into a dragon. But only the bravest koi try to enter because the Dragon Gate is always blocked by dragons.
One day, a small koi told his mom, “I have made a choice. I will enter the gate and become a dragon!” “I don’t want to spoil your dream, but you’re just a small koi,” she said. The little koi said, “All dragons started as small koi. I know I can join them.”
At dawn the small koi set out on his quest. He had to travel around patches of boiling water. The little koi was scared, but he kept going. At last, he saw the Dragon Gate. The small koi paused. He was in awe of the royal dragon at the gate. “I can do it,” he thought.
He swam over. “Halt!” said the golden dragon in a loud voice. “I will soon be a dragon, too!” called the koi. “That’s big talk for a little koi!” the dragon called back. “You ought to go home.” Over and over, the small koi tried to get in. But the dragon always blocked him.
The little koi was annoyed, but he remained loyal to his quest and would not give up. At last, he stopped and thought. “I thought dragons could fly,” called the koi. “But I don’t think you can.” “I can fly,” called the dragon. “Just look!” The dragon coiled his tail and launched himself into the air. Joyce looked at Gramps one fall afternoon. They sat out on the porch and talked. “When I was just a boy,” Gramps began, “I walked a mile across our lawn every morning to a pump, and I would carry back a pail of water. That meant I had to walk back across the lawn again.”
“I am glad we get water from the faucet now,” Joyce joked. “Me too, Joyce,” said Gramps. “It makes cooking and cleaning much simpler.” Then Joyce said, “True or false?” Gramps laughed. Both he and Joyce knew that Gramps liked to invent tall tales about his life. He always liked it when Joyce asked him, “True or false?”
Gramps grinned and said, “Mostly true!” Joyce enjoyed her time with Gramps. He had taught her all sorts of things, like how to toss a ball and how to use chalk to draw on the sidewalk. Once, he taught her how to tie a hook to a fishing line. But what she enjoyed most were his good stories.
Once, Gramps said, “Did I ever tell you the story about my granddad the king? He would have been your great-great-granddad.” He took a drink from his mug. “You mean we are a royal family?” asked Joyce as she shook her head in disbelief. “That is right,” said Gramps. “He was a great and strong man. But he had one flaw.” “What was that, Gramps?” asked Joyce. Gramps paused. “You will think it is silly,” he finally said. “But he liked to play with wooden toys. Even as an adult, he played with toys.”
Joyce laughed. “I also thought it was funny,” smiled Gramps. “In the end, it cost him his land. People did not want a king who thought it was fun to play with toys. So they all became disloyal. Granddad knew it would be a lost cause, and he was not too proud, so he never fought to remain in power.”
“Wow!” said Joyce. “To think, I could have been a princess!” Then she frowned. Gramps smiled, “Yes!” Then Joyce asked, “True or false?” “False,” said Gramps with a laugh. “But you will always be a princess to me, Sweetie!”

Nancy had taught herself how to play sports. She was a star on her basketball team. Plus she was on the tennis team and the track team. And if that was not enough, she was also a star pupil in class!
One spring day, Nancy heard that the town baseball team was looking for players. So far there were only boys on the team. But Nancy thought she was good enough to play. She decided to try out.
With her dad, Nancy ran to the store and bought a new mitt. They also bought a baseball bat, because she thought she might need one that was the right size.
Nancy rode her bike to the field. Some of the players were hitting ground balls. She looked on as an older boy taught a new player how to bunt. Nancy walked over to the coach. She cleared her throat so he would hear her.
“Hi, Coach,” she said. “I am here to try out for the team.” “Great,” said Coach with a smile. “I have seen you play basketball. I cannot wait to see what you can do here today!”
Coach called the players. “Line up. Let’s get started.” Nancy got in line with the boys. She heard one boy laugh. “What are you doing here?” asked that boy. “You are a girl!” Coach heard that. “Girls or boys can try out,” he yelled. “The best players will make it no matter what!” Nancy thought that was the best way.
Then Coach said, “Grab your mitts. We will start with a fielding drill. When we have fielded enough, we will hit. Let’s go!” Nancy ran out with the boys. She caught ball after ball. She thought she did well.
When it was time to hit, Nancy brought out the bat she bought. She hit every pitch hard. She even hit one ball right past the legs of the boy who had laughed at her!
When the tryouts ended, the team came over and gave her pats on the back. “Nice job,” the boys said. It was time for Coach to read the list of new players. Nancy held her breath and waited. “Nancy Fernandez,” Coach said first. Yes! Nancy made the team!

A heavy wind rustled in the trees as Garth the Gnome climbed the steps to his castle. It was autumn on Garth’s island. Garth really liked autumn. The island was full of falling brown and red leaves.
Just as Garth was about to enter the great gate of his castle, he had a gnawing feeling of fright. Was there another sound besides trees rustling? He listened closely. Then he heard it! It was a whistle. But Garth the Gnome lived alone on this island! Who could possibly be whistling? It was not often that he had visitors.
Garth walked away from the castle in search of the whistle. Standing near the lighthouse that stood on the edge of the island, Garth saw a man. Though he may have been small, Garth the Gnome was brave. He walked quickly to meet the strange man.
“Hello, sir,” said the man. “My name is Jasper. I am a knight from a distant land, and the wind has taken my ship astray. I have fastened it to a rock on your shore. Would you be so kind as to allow me shelter for the night within your grand castle?”
Garth took a moment before giving an answer. He glanced at the sword that hung by Jasper’s side. He saw that it held the markings of a noble land that Garth had visited in the past. “It would be my honor to have you as my visitor,” said Garth. “Please climb the steps with me. There is little doubt that you must be hungry.” “Yes,” replied Jasper the Knight. “I have had only crumbs for days.”
Garth the Gnome and Jasper the Knight ate a grand feast that night. Jasper shared stories of his travels. As Garth bid goodnight to Jasper, he could tell the winds had begun to soften. That was a good sign. Jasper would be able to sail in the morning.
The sun rose. Garth gave Jasper food and supplies for his ship. After a light breakfast of plums from the island, Jasper thanked Garth the Gnome and set off. Garth was alone on his island once again. He took out what he would need from the cupboards and coolers. He made the dough for some biscuits for breakfast. He sliced up some chicken strips, and he diced up some veggies. When he had prepared enough food, he scrubbed his hands clean. He rested a moment. He listened to the hum of the refrigerator. Then he heard the bustle of customers and servers.
“Chris, the diner is open!” yelled a server. “It’s time to cook!” Christopher sprung up from his seat. He checked his grill. Just then he heard a bell behind him. It meant an order needed to be filled. Christopher grabbed the scrap of paper that was in the window. He read the order: scrambled eggs, hash browns, and a biscuit.
And so Christopher Jones, the best cook in the state, set to work. He started by putting a sheet of biscuits in the oven. Then he shredded a potato for the hash browns and put them in a frying pan. Next he split three eggs and let them drip into a skillet. The eggs sizzled as Christopher began to scramble them. When the eggs were ready, he spread them out on a plate. He grabbed the hash browns and dumped them on the plate. He sprinkled some pepper and herbs over the plate. Then he set a freshly baked biscuit on the plate.
He brought the plate to the same window with the other orders, and he rang a bell to let the servers know it was ready. Christopher cooked meal after meal. It was tough work, but he had more and more fun as the hours passed.
At ten o’clock, Christopher finished cleaning everything up and closed down for the night. It really was a great day for Christopher Jones. He was very happy he bought the diner.

Owen was excited. Each summer, his family traveled to Uncle Scoop’s town for the big music festival. It was held in an open meadow that overlooked the woods. Lots of cool bands played there. Over the first few days, the family heard bands with saxophones, baritone horns, and wooden drums. But it was the last day’s show that had Owen really excited.
When he woke up, Owen jumped up and ran to wake Mom and Dad. “It’s so early, Owen,” said Dad. “I know!” said Owen. “But we need to go soon! We need tickets. We need to beat the crowds.” “Do I have time for a shower?” asked Dad with a grin. Then Dad slowly looked around. “But I cannot shower until I find my yellow towel.”
Owen knew Dad was teasing. Owen went back to his room. He looked out the window. It had rained last night, so it was muddy. Owen looked at his boots. He had blue boots and brown boots. Which boots should he choose? He was in no mood to think about it. He quickly slipped on his brown boots.
Uncle Scoop cooked a great breakfast. Everyone ate the good, hot food.
As soon as the family finished eating, Owen asked, “Now can we head down to the music festival?” The family looked at each other with smiles. “Relax,” said Dad. “We will see the band.”
Later, Uncle Scoop parked the car at the music fest. The family heard the sounds of good, old music. A small band stood in the parking lot, playing an old tune. Then Owen saw a big sign at the gate that read, “Sold Out.” Sold out? Owen frowned. But Uncle Scoop held up a few tickets. “Read what these say,” said Uncle Scoop.
Owen looked closely. “First row! We will be just a foot from the stage!” Owen bellowed. He threw his arms around his uncle. “And I thought we were going to miss the show!” said Owen. “I would not let you down,” said Uncle Scoop. Dad grinned and said, “That means things are cool, except for one thing.”
“What is that?” asked Uncle Scoop with a wink. “Owen has on one brown boot and one blue boot,” said Dad.
Owen looked down. Dad was not joking! How did he leave the house without knowing?

Miss Fawn taught classes at the park center. She taught art to kids who wanted to know how to draw. Jewel was in Miss Fawn’s class. Jewel had drawn a picture of a single yellow flower. In the picture, the yellow flower was growing on a small mound of brown dirt. Miss Fawn thought Jewel’s drawing was great.
“What a cool drawing, Jewel,” said Miss Fawn. “If it is okay with you, I thought I would hang your picture on the wall. It will show the class how well you are doing.”
Jewel thought for a moment. “Thanks, Miss Fawn! But will you allow me to give you an idea?” asked Jewel. “Will you show Ben’s drawing too? He drew a great picture of a rainbow over snow. People ought to see it.”
“What a nice thought,” said Miss Fawn. She sought out Ben’s desk and saw his drawing. Her jaw dropped. It was fantastic!
“That is a perfect rainbow,” said Miss Fawn. “And I like the way the shower of snowflakes shows the different hues of the rainbow. How did you come up with that, Ben?”
“My dad drives a snowplow,” said Ben. “He lets me ride with him at times. Once, out the window, I saw a rainbow. As the snow was falling down and swirling around, I did not see white flakes. Each flake was a different hue!”
“Well, Ben, you have caught that memory well in your drawing,” said Miss Fawn. “I would like to hang your drawing on the wall.”
On the last day of class, Jewel asked Miss Fawn if she ever drew pictures of her own.
“Why don’t you draw a picture of us?” asked Ben. “Then you will have a drawing to remember us.”
Miss Fawn liked that plan. She brought out her drawing chalk. The class crowded along the wall. It did not take her long to draw her picture. When she was finished, she put it up for the class to see. Everyone thought it was the best drawing ever!
“I am a grown-up,” said Miss Fawn. “And I have known how to draw for a long time. When each of you grows up, you may all draw as well as me, if not better.”
Now all the kids thought Miss Fawn was the best teacher ever.
