Hansen's Disease - Leprosy

↝ Why leprosy?

  • Neglected Tropical Disease
  • Fundation
  • Unpopular, but important

Leprosy

  • Caused by the Mycobacterium leprae, or hansen's bacillus
  • Chronic
  • Affects the skin, the peripheral nerves, mucosal surfaces of the upper respiratory tract and the eyes
  • Old aged
  • Occur within 1 year but can also take as long as 20 years or even more
  • Skins lesions and smers
  • Paucibacillary leprosy (PB)
  • Multibacillary leprosy (MB).
  • Transmitted via droplets, from the nose and mouth, during close and frequent contact with untreated cases

Treatment

SINCE 1981

WHO recommends MDT

WHO provides for free cost and has an agreement with Novartis until 2025.

6 months for pauci-bacillary and 12 months for multi-bacillary cases

1960

Rifampicin and clofazimine added to the treatment

Both medicaments were discovered and subsequently added to the treatment regime. Now called MDT

Use of Dapsone

This treatment lasted many years
