Why are schedules important?
Schedules and routines are important for children because it helps them know what comes next and creates predictable and safe environments. Even though times are currently unpredictable it is important to try and establish some routines in your home. It can help reduce arguments as the expectations are outlined and consistent. How can I begin using
Routines & schedules at home?
- Set up a homework space that is well lit and organized with their school materials (if space is limited have them keep their supplies in a bag that they can grab for school/homework time)
- Offer choice on the timing of homework completion
- Create a calendar schedule where students (or parents for young children) write down due dates, schedule zoom calls with teachers, pace out project assignments, set reading routines, etc.
- Praise your child for completing task with a sticker or plan a fun and free activity as a reward
- Encourage your child to become independent of the schedule without consistent reminders and express your confidence in them
- When helping your child, don’t just give them the answer, discuss problem solving strategies
- Practice taking breaks (go for a walk, breath, read a story, etc.) and return to work refreshed and focused
