Elementary Curriculum Updates

Here are a few updates about elementary curriculum:

  1. We won’t have any brand new purchases at the elementary (K-6) this year in the general core subjects. Since we just adopted Ready Mathematics, Mystery Science and Character Strong last year, the administrative team would like to spend time this year solidifying knowledge in these areas.
  2. Preschool- The last time EBF updated the preschool curriculum (Creative Curriculum) was in 2013. Since that time, MANY updates have been made to incorporate GOLD within the curriculum and to make it much easier for the teachers to pull lessons from the cloud. To update and use the online cloud is as follows (for all four PS teachers):
    1. 1 year- $12, 072
    2. 3 years-$16,792
    3. 5 years- $20, 712
  3. Health- We will be using The Great Body Shop health curriculum for our health special this year.
  4. Computer Science- The elementary will have computer science this year as part of their specials schedule. We will be using curriculum from NewBoCo (Code.org).

Junior High/High School Curriculum Updates

Here are a few updates about JH/HS Curriculum:

  • ELA/Reading- We have added in a reading class at the JH. We will be using Open Up Resources. This curriculum uses real trade books as well as smaller passages and has a full array of standards based reading lessons. Mrs. Holdsworth will be teaching the reading class and collaborating with Mrs. Haines who will be doing the 7th/8th grade ELA position. Mrs. Haines will also be using the myPerspectives curriculum (which is what the high school uses).
  • Science- Open SciEd- The middle school will continue to use the OpenSciEd units. As more of these units are released, we will order the teacher book and classroom materials. The HS is also piloting some OpenSciEd units.
  • Social Studies- A few years ago, the state moved to a more inquiry based form of SS instruction. The SS teachers will be working collaboratively to create inquiry based units throughout the year.
  • Business- Mrs. Lehman, our new business teacher and I have been collaborating on looking at the current business curriculum. She is going to try the BizInnovator curriculum from the University of Iowa to teach Entrepreneurship. She will use NGPF (Next Generation Personal Finance) as well as other teachers’ unit plans to help her create the careers curriculum (for both JH and HS).
  • Health- Mrs. Genskow will be getting updated HS Health curriculum books from Goodheart-Wilcox this year.
  • Math- This will be the second year of implementation for Ready Classroom Mathematics.
