What is

Assistive Technology?

  • “Any item, piece of equipment, or product system, whether acquired commercially or off the shelf, modified, or customized, that is used to increase, maintain, or improve functional capabilities of individuals with disabilities.”​ - Assistive Technology Act, 2004​

What is

Universal Design?

  • Material items, products, and environments being designed and created in a manner that allows for all people to utilize and participate with, without additional adaptation.
  • Universal design will work for everyone, regardless of their ability levels, and be less noticeable and stigmatizing than a pure accessibility design.
    • Accessible design is created to hit certain code requirements set in place to accommodate for those with disabilities.

Marla has been an Occupational Therapist for 30 years and has worked in the field of assistive technology for over two decades.

Marla oversees campus AT supports and services and develops curricula related to assistive technology and universal design.
