Notes for teachers

Make sure to ask parents if any students have any flower allergies as students may be unsure since they may mistake the question for seasonal allergies.

  • plastic knives
  • flowers (preferably lilies)
  • tape
  • scissors
  • vocabulary presentation (provided on agenda slide)
  • flower dissection worksheet (provided in agenda slide)

5.L3U1.9 Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information about patterns between the offspring of plants, and the offspring of animals (including humans); construct an explanation of how genetic information is passed from one generation to the next. ● Many characteristics of organisms are inherited from their parents. ● Different organisms vary in how they look and function because they have different inherited information.

  • Pass out materials
  • Students dissect flowers and complete worksheet that goes along with activity.
  • Students will complete the quiz by labeling the parts of a flower.

Hands-on Activity Instructions

  • Individual Activity
  • Pass out worksheets and show students how to fold it into a little booklet (whatever your preference is)
  • Students will cut up flowers provided and then tape parts to the correct areas in the booklet
  • Student will state the function of each part of the flower

Assessment

Short quiz labeling the parts of a flower

Students will be given the name of each part of the flower and will chose the correct function.

Students can create a digital version of their flower diagram. This can be done by taking pictures or modeling the flower parts in TinkerCAD or Sketchpad

Differentiation

Have pre cut flowers so some students do not have to cut up the flowers if they are not able to. This allows them to still complete the worksheet.

For the quiz, students may have the choice of doing the quiz verbally with the teacher.

Remediation

Extension/Enrichment

Students can use different types of flowers and try to complete the worksheet using flowers that do not have a visible pistil and stamen to make it more challenging.
