PRIMARY QUESTION

Is the quality of the performance

good enough to go to State?

If yes, score them 40 or above.

If no, score them below 40.

7 of 25

SCORING & RECOGNITION

29 = GOOD

    • NEVER give a score LOWER than 29.
    • This is basically a catastrophic failure. These students will not receive a medal.

30-39 = EXCELLENT

    • These scores receive a medal

39.5-50 = SUPERIOR

    • These scores receive a medal and go to State - UNLESS the event has a cap.
    • Do NOT give a score of 50. Students will infer that they are perfect and may not continue to strive for improvement.

Rankings (1st, 2nd, 3rd) are NOT given at District.

COMMENTS

  • YOU MUST WRITE COMMENTS NO MATTER WHAT. Do NOT just select numbers.

  • Include positive and uplifting comments as well as helpful, kind, and constructive comments on every ballot about their performance.
  • NEVER write negative, sarcastic, or hurtful comments.
  • If you deduct points, make sure to give reasons. Students get frustrated when they receive a low score, but only receive a comment such as “nice job”.

9 of 25

DO NOT DEDUCT POINTS IF…

  • You don’t like the selection or cut that the student chose
  • You don’t personally approve of the content of the selection
  • A male does a female selection or a female does a male selection

  • You feel a performance is too short

Judge the QUALITY of the performance

not your preferences or enjoyment.

“CAPPED” DISTRICT EVENTS

  • No more than 40 performance entries or 25 technical entries are allowed to go to the state festival in each event.

  • Some events may have a limit (cap) on the number of entries allowed to pass forward. You will be informed if your category has a cap and what that number is.
  • District judges must confer and pass forward ONLY the allowed number of those scoring “superior” to the state level.
  • Just because there is a cap, doesn’t mean you HAVE to send that many. It only means you can’t send more than that number.

11 of 25

RESCHEDULING REQUESTS

  • Students may have schedule conflicts. This is NOT the student’s fault. Accommodate requests for rescheduling in the best way possible.
  • If a student does not show up at their scheduled time, go on to the next student available in the room. When the other shows up, you can judge them at that time. However, if a student adamantly does not want to go earlier than their scheduled time, please don’t force them.
  • AVOID WASTING TIME WAITING IF THERE ARE OTHER STUDENTS PRESENT WHO CAN BE JUDGED.
  • If you have finished judging a category and a student has not shown up, contact the Chair for advice and go ahead and start comparing scores.

12 of 25

DROPS

  • As drops come in, we will remove them from the system, so you may see some disappear throughout the day from the computer.

  • They will still be on your paper tally sheets, but if they are not in the computer, they have been dropped.

13 of 25

DISQUALIFICATIONS

  • Judges can recommend a Disqualification, but do not have the authority to issue one.

  • If you think a performance should be Disqualified…
    • Finish judging and scoring the performance.
    • Consider if the selection would be passed to state. If not, is it worth it?
    • Mark “Exception” on the Ballot and speak to the District Chair when you turn in.

  • Reasons a piece could be disqualified:
    • The performance exceeded the time limit
    • Inappropriate Content (this is very subjective)
    • A piece is performance in the wrong category

AFTER YOU HAVE FINISHED JUDGING

COMPARE SCORES

  • After all students have performed and room is cleared, judges should compare scores.
  • There should be NO MORE than a 5 point difference.
  • Adjust scores as necessary- make sure to re-average and update the tally sheet.

COMPLETE TALLY SHEET

    • Fully complete with 1) judge average 2) rating and 3) state recommendations
    • Make sure judge name and phone number are completed in case of questions.

TURN IN TALLY SHEET

    • Take to the tally room and wait for a volunteer to check over your sheet.

OTHER INFORMATION

  • Judges can welcome the student and be polite, but no other conversation or oral feedback is allowed.

  • Avoid saying things like “See you at state” or “at state you should…”
  • Students are encouraged to do a sound check before a musical or pantomime event. Timing begins AFTER the introduction at the first word, movement, or music note.
  • Judges should not stop a piece for any reason.

  • Try to stay on or ahead of schedule. When a student finishes performing, immediately call the next student to get prepared.
  • Do NOT ask or seek out the name of the school in which the student is from.

  • Judges have the authority to warn the audience or clear the room of observers if there are disruptive behaviors taking place. Call the Chair for serious issues.

OTHER INFORMATION

  • If you think a piece is in the wrong category, click on “Exemption” on the ballot.

  • Do Not clear the room between performances.

  • 5 minute events have been given 7 minute slots. 3 minute events have been given 5 minute slots. Try to jot down a few notes or make a few notations in the system. Then, come back and finish during a break, over lunch, or at the end of the day. Please do not deliberate between performances. We need to keep rooms moving and on schedule to avoid overlapping other IEs and Studios/One Acts.

  • Spectators are welcome to observe, but they should not disturb your process.
