UHM ISPP Philosophy/Mission

  • To provide the foundation knowledge and skills in dietetics for successful preparation of students for supervised practice leading to eligibility for the CDR credentialing exam to become a registered dietitian nutritionist with an emphasis on community nutrition and an appreciation for the unique cultural environment of Hawai‘i and US Affiliated Pacific Region.
  • No other accredited programs in region
  • Approximately 80% of RDNs working in Hawai‘i have been trained either in UHM DPD or ISPP

UHM ISPP Goals & Objectives

Goal 1: To produce undergraduate dietetics prepared for accredited dietetic internships, institutions of higher learning, and supervised practice graduates prepared for entry level RDN practice through high quality education and training.

  • “At least 80% of graduates of the Supervised Practice will complete the SP within 15 months (150% of the program length).”
  • “Of graduates who seek employment, 80% are employed in nutrition and dietetics or related fields within 12 months of completing the Supervised Practice.” 
  • “100% of program graduates take the CDR credentialing exam for dietitian nutritionists within 12 months of program completion.”
  • “The program’s one-year pass rate (graduates who pass the registration exam within one year of first attempt) on the CDR credentialing exam for dietitian nutritionists is at least 80%.”
  • 90% of employers who responded to the employer survey will rate our graduates as prepared or well prepared for their position. 
  • 90% of graduates who responded to the alumni survey will rate themselves as prepared or well prepared for their employment (UHM Specific).

  • 70% of graduates will indicate on an alumni survey they are now employed in a professionally related position in Hawai‘i and/or the US Affiliated Pacific.
  • 80% of graduates will complete a community experience unique to Hawai'i.

  • 1000 minimum hours, 700 must occur in professional work settings
  • Required to result in graduate degree or require graduate degree for admission to dietetic internships
  • Training for preceptors on strategies to recognize and monitor biases in self and others to reduce instances of microaggression and discrimination

  • New competencies:
    • CRDN 3.3 Perform routine health screening assessments including measuring blood pressure, conducting waived point-of-care laboratory testing (such as blood glucose or cholesterol), recommending and/or initiating nutrition-related pharmacotherapy plans (such as modifications to bowel regimens, carbohydrate to insulin ratio, B12 or iron supplementation)

    • CRDN 3.4 Provide instruction to clients/patients for self-monitoring blood glucose, considering diabetes medication and medical nutrition therapy plan.
