INTRODUCTION
Shadvidha upakramas consists of six different procedures like LANGHANA, BRIMHANA,SNEHANA SWEDANA, STAMBHAN AND RUKSHAN.And these are the core of Chikitsa in Ayurveda.
Concept of Shadvidha upakramas according to different Acharyas Acharya Charaka has mentioned these shadvidha Upakramas in Sutrasthan Yojana Chatushka in Langhanbrihaniya Adhyaya.Even in Vimansthana Adhyaya-3,Janapadodvanshiya Viman,he has mentioned ApatarpanaBhedas(Langhan-Langhanpachan-Doshavasechan).
In Sushruta Samhita, Acharya Sushruta described Langhana in Jwarchikitsa Adhyaya.
In Ashtang Hridaya ,Acharya Vagbhatt has mentioned Dwividhopkrama in which Santarpana(Brimhana) and Apatarpana(Langhana) are there.
He has taken six Upakramas under two Upakramas.
Where Langhan, Rukshana and Swedana comes under Apatarpana .
Brimhana,Snehana and Stambhana comes under Santarpana.

Shadvidha Upakrama,a comprehensive and an integral part of AYURVEDIC treatment plays a pivotal role in every therapeutic condition providing radical relief from disease.

APPLICATION OF LANGHAN UPAKRAMAS
Langhana upakrama is being used in-
1-Aamashayottha vyadhi
2-Rasanimittaja vikara
3-Jwara
4- Sama Vyadhi
5-Santarpanottha Vikara
BRIMHANA UPAKRAMA
Whatever diet /drug/procedure/management /increase to corpulence of the bodily substances is known as brimhana.
Mainly Brimhana dravya are having properties like heavy, cold, soft , thick,Bulky,Slimy,Sluggish,Stable,Smooth.
Generally, the therapy which include body growth and mass is called Brimhana upakrama
INDICATIONS OF BRIMHANA UPAKRAMA
Person who are suffering from wasting emaciation,old age, weakness,exertion from long tours,habitual indulgence in sexual act and wine.
Soup of meat of such of the meat-eating bird and animals are light by nature
For digestion.Bath, Unction,sleep,Enema with sweet and uncuous drugs, suger,milk and ghee-known these to be of Brimhana for all the persons.
SNEHANA UPAKRAMA
Whatever diet/ drug/ procedure/management causes unctuousness,fluidity softness a moistness is known as snehana.
Mainly Snehana dravyas are having properties like liquid, subtle,fluid,unctuous, slimy ,heavy ,cold, sluggish.
the therapy which creates snighata, mardavata,kledana, and vishyandana is called snehana therapy.
TYPES OF SNEHANA
According to the route of administration snehana is divided into two
1- BAHYA-In the form Abhyanga, Akshitarpana,Avagaha,Karnapoorana,Parisheka etc.
2 ABHYANTARA- In the form of snehapana ,Basti,Nasya etc.
MODE OF ACTION
1-Shodhana- This is being administered for the dosha utkleshana before vaman and virechan as per the kostha and agni of the patient.
2-Shamana-Generally the sneha ,which is being prepared with different dravyas and it is is being administered empty stomach is called shamana.
3-BRIMHANA- Sneha which is given along with food in small quantity for the nurishment is called shamana sneha.
SWEDANA UPAKRAMA
Whatever diet /drug/drug/procedure / management cures stiffness heaviness and coldness(of the body)is known as Swedana Upakrama.
Mainly Swedana dravyas are having properties like hot, sharp fluid unctuous rough,,sobtle ,liquid, stable ,heavy.
Generally the therapy which eliminates stiffness,heaviness and coldness from body is called swedana upakrama.

According to Acharya SHUSRUTA swedana has been divided into four types
1-TAPA SWEDANA-Jentaka,Karshu,Kuti,Kupa
2-USHMA SWEDANA-Sankara ,Prastara, Nadi,Asmaghana,Kumbhi,Bhoo
3-DRAVA SWEDANA –Parishek, Avagaha
4-UPANAHA SWEDANA
INDICATION OF SWEDANA
Apart from these common types ,different references of other swedana like Shastishali,Pindasweda which are can be useful in Pakshghata ,Vaspswedana in shoola and Gridhrasi Kshirdhooma in Ardita ,Dhanyamla Dhara in aamvata, Valuka swedana in aamvata ,Upanaha sweda in Vatavyadhi .
STAMBHANA UPAKRAMA
Whatever diet/drug/ procedure/management that surely prevent mobility and flow of bodily substance is known as Stambhana.
Mainly Stambhana dravayas are having properties like cold,sluggish,soft,smooth,Rough subtle, Liquid,Stable and light.
In general ,the therapy which restricts the flow of the substance is known as Stambhana therapy.
INDICATION OF STAMBHANA
RUKSHANA UPAKRAMA
Whatever diet /drug /procedure /management causes dryness,roughness, and non sliminess is known as Rukshana .
Mainly rukshana dravyas are having properties like rough,light dry sharp,hot,stable ,nonslimy,hard.
In general ,the therapy which reduce water, fat and mucous from the body is called Rukshana upakrama.
INDICATION OF RUKSHANA
Rukshana upakrama is being used exernally in the form of udavartana by applying ruksha lepas and internally by use of ausadha and aahar through rukshana dravyas intake in pungent ,bitter,and astringent substance, oil cake of musturd and til ,honey, takrapana etc.
ROLE OF UPKRAMAS
In any kind of Samprapti there are mainly three taking place.
1- Avarana of AGNI
2- Agnimandhya
3Accumulation of Malas

CONCLUSION
Shadvidha Upakrama can be also termed as DHATUSAMYA KRIYA .
These Upakrama are necessary to separate Mala from Adhisthana before applying any kind of Chikitsasutra in any kind of patholoy.
Any procedure or treatment plan which break the pathology of the disease come under Shadvidha Upakrama.
Before applying any Upakrama, Roga and Rogi Avastha should assessed properly .
That is the reason applying Shadvidha Upakrama is called YuktiVyapashraya.
That is why Shadvidha Upakrama and their role in Chikitsa are essential to understand.
